2021 edge rush prospects

All evidence and reports are that Carolina is desperate for a difference maker at quarterback. Give me a three-way trade! Miami gets picks 8 and 12. They can still get their wide receiver, potentially Micah Parsons which is a belichick and Tom Flores special, and offensive line with their third first round pick. Carolina gets Zach Wilson or Fields at pick number three, and the 49ers get Brian Burns. Brian Burns, in my opinion, is worth more than the number 12 pick but Carolina can't be beggars and choosers. We will have a lot to figure out with the salary cap in a few years, but at least arik armstead's contract will be off the books by the time Burns and bosa's rookie deals are up. Wishful thinking, I know

Now thats what you call aggressive..going for Burns. Wow.

Ballsy trade! Teams trading for a QB while we will be loading up to kill their QB

As prospects or with regards to draft value?

Trade value. I don't see anyone drafting any of this lot in the top 10.
Of the 20 highest graded edge rushers last season per @PFF, 15 were 1st-round picks Not the position to wait to address Day 2 or 3

Do you have this statistic for other position groups?

One of my favorite edge rusher is joseph ossai texas. I have seen him in mocks as high as teens and some have him missing the first round? He plays nice but I think it will take him a year to adjust into a starter for a 4/3 team.

Different people have been looking at that data for some time. Back in the olden days when Cassius Marsh was put top edge rusher it was stated if you want a top edge guy, you have to get him in the 1st.

We don't need a top edge guy though, we have Bosa and if Kinlaw carries on we have an inside push to prevent the QB stepping up. All we need is a supplementary rusher who can occasionally beat a tackle 1v1 or chase the QB that gets flushed out of the pocket his way.

Odd take for me, coming from someone who understands football like I can tell you do. Verbiage used just screams that it's okay to settle at the most important position on defense. That DLine took us to the superbowl. We have zero corners signed, with limited cap space to sign a ready-to-dominate option. Corners are hard to rely on year one as rookies. We should be doing everything we can to trot out the most dominant front 4 possible.

It's about opportunity cost for me, yes I'd love a stacked DL, but I don't think that is happening out of this class, I'm not reaching for someone just because they're the best of a terrible class.

I wonder what Ryan Kerrigan would cost, that interests me.

I'm going to take a harder look at Ojulari, but I have severe doubts that he'd help much as a rookie.

Your point about the secondary is valid, but aside from your imaginative trade for Burns, or a rebirth of Dee Ford, I don't see how we get that dominant DL we had this year.

Thanks though! Appreciated.

Draft edge rushers every year. I've watched a good amount now. Here's my top 5 before we get combine/pro-day numbers.

1) *Jaelan Phillips
2) Azeez Olujari
3) Kwity Paye
4) Joseph Ossai
5) Ronnie Perkins

From what I've seen I would agree with your top 3. Haven't watched much of ossai or Perkins yet.

At what point would you draft Phillips?

Like if he was there end of the 1st round or beginning of 2nd I would be tempted to move up for him

Agree, I don't think you need a top tier edge rusher like another Bosa 2.0, however I'd love to have a late first round edge rusher (if they don't go QB at the #12 pick) and a late first/second round DB. That way the 49er nickel defense is bolstered. I'd love to have a shut down nickel defense that's very strong against the pass and have the depth at the defensive back side to shut down most passing attacks.

Agreed - draft edge every year. Pressuring/sacking the QB is that important. If the Niners can re-sign T. Williams, I really hope they take an edge at 12. I'll take Paye there...or would definitely consider taking Ojulari.
