2021 edge rush prospects

With the proliferation of mobile QBs, rushing in your lane, keeping eyes on the QB and bracketing them inside the pocket is more important than ever. Rushing at the top of the arc is a lot riskier than taking a straight path to the QB because the B gap is being stretched out. Also, most guys need to set up power with speed and can't rely on power alone.

The problem is good luck finding good power-based edge rushers. They're rare and there aren't any really good ones in this draft. There aren't many guys that are 50 lbs lighter than tackles that are going to overpower them. It's the short, explosive and strong guys that live here(Khalil Mack, Carl Lawson, etc).

You're not gonna find an edge rusher who can consistently over power any quality offensive tackle in this league... well, minus McGlinchey lol.

The best ones are able to do a speed to power conversion, where you set it up as a speed rush, then drive into an off balance tackle.

Its rare to be able to do this successfully, Larry Johnson who is now the defensive line coach at Ohio State and formally of Penn State is the best at teaching it, and it's why wherever he goes, he churns out 1st round defensive ends.

Yeah, minus his lack of effort, power and speed.

I disagree with Jeremiah, I don't think a power rush is the best way. I still like speed rushers that swat the ball, strip it and force the QB to move. I think more of NBA power forwards for the pass rush, less penalties. Why hit a QB at all if it is a 1st down and 15 yards?

AA is a power rusher but a s**t one. Dude is too damn tall, not very long despite being insanely tall and not very good with his hands. Then you throw in the inconsistent get off, no go-to counter and you've got one massive overpaid turd. I hated this pick in 2015.

also, despite being a power-based guy, AA consistently gives up contain. I can't count how many times this dude chased the wrong shoulder to allow the QB to spill out.

How do we evaluate Carlos Basham as a power rusher?
Good Lord Jayson Oweh, PSU Edge, ran a 4.38 laser timed 40! Just saw it on NFLN. Let's see if he can do it again at his pro day. 🤯

Everybody wants that DE that can walk the tackle right back into the QBs lap. That produces a bigger impact than a guy that tries to run around them.
