Jaelan Phillips-EDGE-Miami

This guy medically retired from football at one point. Given what we just went through, I have to wonder if Lynch would be too shell shocked to spend a top 50 pick on him.

It's tough to watch these highlights and not envision pairing him with Bosa, though.

And that is the major risk, especially considering this team's track record with injury prone players. In terms of technical ability, Phillips is the most complete edge rusher in the draft. If he could stay healthy he'd be a perfect running mate with Bosa but that is a giant IF.

No. It was concussion concerns.

Agree, he is a 3-4 OLB. I also agree with other poster that Rosseau is vastly overrated

If you look at the film, Rousseau gets most of his sacks by playing him inside (a la Arik Armstead) on obvious passing situations and having him dominate IOL. He still has skills, but he hasn't proven he can succeed consistently on the outside against the best pass blockers. Phillips has proven he can win on the outside, but he won't be drafted till the late first at the earliest. Roche is the "sleeper" of this trio and may end up being the best of the bunch.
I've been seeing a lot of mocks with him being there with our 2nd pick. How long ago did he retire and how long has he been playing since?

He's definitely worth our second round pick. All in all, it depends on how he interviews. How much is his heart into football. After the Joe Williams situation, I don't think this team takes the risk.
Dude is really nice, but I would stay away from anyone who retired. I didn't even know about that until you guys brought it up.
He's a 1st round talent but concussion concerns will be huge in the medicals and see where he's at with desire to play in the NFL longterm

Exactly. I need a legit edge rusher opposite of Bosa or a guy that can easily keep the pressure up should we be giving Bosa and Hyder (if resigned) a breather

It might be a risk to take this kid with his injury history but sometimes in life or business you have to take risks. I would take a chance on this kid because he is just scratching the surface on his potential. You could trade back a few spots and then pick this kid. He has the length with power in his hands and athleticism to be a great player in the NFL.
What a s**tty situation. I just wrapped everything I could find online of Philips, and I think he's the best edge pass rusher in the draft. But he's undraftable in my eyes due to the retirement stuff. As much I'd love to just ignore it, you can't. The NFL doesn't get any easier.

I'm not so sure this is the year to draft an edge rusher early. This class is super underwhelming.

Jaelan Phillips has a very interesting story plus he is the top pass rusher in this entire draft, and he was probably the top high school player in the country and then he committed to ucla because his family went there and his first game he played well then bad luck with injuries with high ankle sprain and a concussion. Then the next year he had a new coach and he got into a vehicle accident where his wrist got messed up and he eventually had a set back and had another surgery on the wrist and it effected him when he came back to play and then he suffered another concussion that year and ucla basically told him to medically retire from football.
"I had a lot of expectations, both from myself and from people, and getting those injuries .... as an athlete, our body is our asset, so when your body starts to fail you, it's a weird feeling. It derails what you got going on,"Phillips said.
He then focused his school and life on music and then his former coach Jim Mora called him and said are you really done with football because we both know the love you have for football and how talented you are give it another chance and he reformed his body again eating 260 grams of protein a day while working out. He then played really good football last year for Miami displaying all his talent and this kid is just scratching the surface.
