Jaelan Phillips-EDGE-Miami

I read that his dad, in an interview with 247 sports, had mentioned that Jaelan had lost his love for the sport and was the last to arrive first to leave type, and this was before the medical retirement. My guess is he never loved football, just loved being "the guy.". Some guys peak in highschool and can never let go of that feeling.

His stated reason for going to Miami was that they had the best music program of all the schools that were offering him after he chose to leave UCLA. If the guy loves music production and it appears that he does and has a real passion for it then more power to him but that doesn't make him a good fit in the NFL where you pretty much have to live, eat, sleep football or you'll get chewed up and spit out.

"One of my main reasons for transferring was I wanted to transfer to a school with a really good music production program. I remember I was looking at lists before and Miami was at the top of the list for music. But since they didn't have interest in me, I really didn't think about it. Once they showed interest, I went back and looked at it, started looking at everything that was available for me in Miami and it was honestly a perfect fit for what I want to do."

Music called. Phillips thought he'd rap at first. He released a few songs. Turns out it felt too personal.

"I didn't want to get roasted by my friends, bro," Phillips said.

Then came an all-in foray into sound engineering and producing. His time at Los Angeles Community college provided a base. From there, he'd work eight- to 10-hour days in a kitchen to help make Shamba's album. Shamba said Phillips helped him so much that he pulled one of his initial singles, "Hold You," off SoundCloud and replaced it with Phillips' mix, because he made the sound so much bigger.

This musical magnetism is a key reason Phillips ended up at Miami. Stanford and USC were both options and had good music schools. But Miami, one of the elite music schools in the country, provided a top-tier engineering program and a city infused with hip-hop in its soul.

Jon describes a high-point of Phillips' initial Miami visit as visiting with professors from the music school. They asked Phillips to pull out his laptop and showcase his work. An hour later, a previously hesitant professor offered to bend his class schedule around Phillips' football practices.

Reading these quotes, he seems like a dude who wants to play just to get paid so he can have the resources and freedom to do his music thing, not wanting to be stuck at some dead-end job.

"I lived a completely different lifestyle from what I was doing and what I imagined my life would be like," Phillips told 247Sports. "I never imagined I'd be working a desk job and being an intern and being at the bottom of the feeding pit."

He landed an internship at iHeartRadio. He wrote blog posts and helped set up for shows at Six Flags. "I was like, 'I was freaking making sacks against Texas A&M last year and now I'm cleaning up trash. Yo, this is whack.'"

Maybe he turns out to be a good NFL player and has a long career, maybe not, eitherway there's way too many red flags for the 49ers to roll with this guy in the first round, regardless of talent.

It's gonna be crazy when the niners draft this very talented kid with the 12th pick and everybody is gonna be b***hing and crying 😂😂 but the film doesn't lie he is probably edge 1.

The film didn't lie with Froster, Joe Williams or Chris Borland either. There's more to drafting a player than gamefilm. Between the chronic concussions, the other numerous injury issues he had as well as him seemingly having a greater passion for music than football, let this be someone else's problem to worry about. If he turns out to be a great player, than outstanding, but the 49ers can't risk another whiff in the first round on a guy with red flags so bright you can see them from space.

Very good points you made and I understand your point of view but I'm not saying I would draft him. I'm just saying it could happen because he is very talented and he played some good football this past year. Injured players tend to keep getting injured. Just sayin'. Phillips' film is overwhelmingly good. He flies off the edge!

Hope not...he might do the Dee Ford thingy, then just focus on music career with all the monies and free time
Read up on this guy today...gotta say, I'm pretty impressed. He took full advantage of Rousseau opting out and in the process has made a name for himself. He's pretty much Bosa's size, has the quicks, strength and all-around game to be quite a bookend to Nick. I'd love to see him go at #12, then his teammate TE Brevin Jordan in the 2nd rd. They're two playmakers who could make an immediate impact.
I think at 12 hes a little to raw for that. Trade back into early 20's pick up a few picks im down!

Talent wise, he's definitely worthy of the 12th pick. He's the closest thing to Brian Burns since Brian Burns.

It's rare to see a dude at 265 lbs as agile and flexible as Phillips. Once you start getting over 260 lbs, a lot of athletes are stiff and mechanical. It's rare to find a dude that fluid, agile and bendy at that bodyweight.

What a sad waste of supreme talent.
Jaelan phillips said he Never missed a workout, practice, or game at Miami...I'm healthy lol 😂 Got a few chips on my shoulder 💯💯 this kid seems like he is determined to prove the haters wrong. Plus the film shows that he plays hard with effort. His coach at Miami said he loves football and it showed on the practice field and during the games.

Maybe, but actions speak louder than Instagram posts
