Kellen Mond-QB-Texas A&M

Much rather take Davis Mills in the 3rd/4th
Wouldn't mind going after Mond. He's very athletic and has a strong compact throwing motion. I follow Chris Simms and he puts Mond very high.

Mond plays in a pro style system and is athletic with a very good arm.

here's Simms thoughts on Mond. I'm going to wait and see how Cossell reviews these QBs.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/49ers-drafting-kellen-mond-no-12-isnt-crazy-idea-chris-simms-says%3famp

I don't think that's crazy. I don't," Simms recently said on his Unbuttoned podcast (H/T 49ers Web Zone). "I think he fits the Shanahan system. I think he's got everything Kyle would want. I do. Again, I see touch, I see anticipation, I see phenomenal throws with no room in the pocket."

So, does Simms expect five other quarterbacks to fly off the board before the 49ers get to their pick? Not exactly.

Simms actually ranks Zach Wilson as his top quarterback available, ahead of popular No. 1 mock draft pick Trevor Lawrence. He then ranks Mac Jones third, followed by Mond, Justin Fields and Trey Lance.
Chris Simms has a damn good record at ranking QBs. Man was 2019 a crappy year for QBs.

Chris Simms' record with quarterback evaluation

Simms tends to get a lot of hate for going against the tide with his quarterback rankings, but he's had pretty good hit rate so far. Plus he never lets other scouts' opinions sway him and his evaluations. Here are his QB prospect rankings:

2018

Lamar Jackson
Josh Allen
Baker Mayfield
Sam Darnold
Josh Rosen

2019
Kyler Murray
Drew Lock
Dwayne Haskins
Ryan Finley
Jarrett Stidham
Daniel Jones
Clayton Thorson
Will Grier

2020
Joe Burrow
Justin Herbert
Jordan Love
Tua Tagovailoa

He didn't make the QB prospect ranking video for the 2017 draft class, but while he was at Bleacher Report he had came out to say that Patrick Mahomes Is 2017 NFL Draft's Most Special QB Talent

I think his track record speaks for itself. He's got a really good eye for QB talents and a team looking for a quarterback in the upcoming draft should really take his opinions under consideration.

Out of the pistol no less. Kap, you ain't fooling anyone.

He looks exactly like Kap.

I feel like he's a better passer than Kap.

I don't see anything resembling Kap. Mond's footwork is better in that his step is short when he throws. Doesn't throw like a javelin thrower either.

You would take Mills in the 4th? I mean it's your opinion but with that knee and not even close to as much playing time as Mond, in the SEC, I don't see it. I love Mills but more for the value aspect he brings meaning I think we can get him late day 3. I'd be happy with either though end of day as a guy to groom

Mills is more talented, I mean he was a high recruited QB coming out of high school, ranked higher than Tua even but the injury issues make him too unreliable. Mond might not amount to anything but if a team is willing to give him a year or two to simply sit, watch, learn and rework his mechanics, I think he has the potential of becoming a solid to good NFL starting QB.

Other than how he holds the ball, what's wrong with his mechanics? He has short hitches and has very good pocket awareness and mobility in that he doesn't run to a hole but shifts to the hole keeping his feet.
And he can throw with very little room like Rodgers.

If he's there for our 3rd round comp, I'd love to draft him. Athletic, nice arm, good pocket awareness. If we got him, I'd damn sure be more excited about him on our team learning from Shanny then any point or time that we had CJ. Let him sit behind Jimmy and hold a clipboard for two more years and learn the offense. Jimmy inevitably will get hurt so he will get his chance to play and at least show some of the potential he has.
I'm surprised Mond didn't run more. The dude can fly.

I'd like to see if he can quickly go through progressions, make the right read and make the completion with accuracy. From the limited clips I've seen, he looks like he's staring down the receiver. Maybe it's just limited film.

Same. I don't get all the hate this kid is getting in here, we ain't taking him with the 12th pick (I know what Simms said lol). If we don't go QB first, this is the type of talent you take flyers on day 2 IMO, guys with elite traits and abilities that if molded could turn into something. To your point, we TRADED UP in the 3rd for freaking Beathard, no idea what the hell Shanny saw in him besides he ran a pro style offense, he was a day 3 prospect at best lol. Then we topped that off and drafted a freaking Punter in the 4th. Give me Mond all day over those two in rounds 3/4

Slater or top corner with our first, whichever position we didn't take with our first pick we take with our second and then Mond with the third round comp. I'd be really excited and happy with our draft.

Side note, I think we find our complimentary pass rusher to Bosa in free agency as there is a lot of talent supposedly going to be out there. Plus, not to wild about this years crop of pass rushers.

There are some plays where he goes through progressions. His footwork on his hitches is solid as well. He also hangs in the pocket with subtle shifts for as long as he can.

There are VERY good things to work with here. It's not a full sloppy slow footwork running style pocket movement here.

The throwing/arm ability is absolutely there already.
Comp pick in R5 sd where he's worth the gamble. 4% of QBs taken after R1 (96 total) since 2011 become franchise NFL QBs. Wilson, Carr, Dak, and Cousins. That's it. If you want to lower the bar, throw Dalton, Tua, and Hurts in. Then it's a whopping 7% chance.

Everyone thinks there is a sleeper or hidden gem: DeShone Kizer, Brett Hundley, Geno Smith, Davis Webb, Connor Cook , Christain Hackenberg, etc, etc. 96% of the time they fail.

In many ways he's still very much a work in progress. Where I felt he was underrated before, now due to Simms I feel like people are coming up with potato takes on him. His delivery is a hot mess, he needs to improve his footwork considerably. It's a large part of why his accuracy is inconsistent, his feet aren't married to the rest of his body the way you want to see, leading to a lot of throws from an uneven platform. The talent is clearly there, he has progressed consistently throughout college which is good to see but he's someone you ideally sit for a couple of years to let him work on his flaws.

If he fixes all of that stuff, he could be a pretty good QB but that is a big if. Look at Sam Darnold, his stuff is still just as jacked up as it was in college.

So yeah I'd take him in the 4th with the belief that it might take him awhile before he is NFL ready.

Yeah but if what you thought every single one of those guys would suck?

His eye for WR talent is great too. He singled out Chase Claypool last year.

He's going to make a great GM for a team that can already draft defensive talent well. He be a great pairing for Saleh after they fire Trent Baalke.
