I don't think Jones lasts until our second round pick. He definitely looks like a Kyle style QB.
It wouldn't shock me to see Lance fall to around where we pick although not expecting it.
Got no problem with a trade up though if our guy is there.

This is just how I see it:
I would love to be in the room when they have this discussion. I honestly believe they want to see how Jimmy develops because he honestly hasn't played a ton of games. I think Baker had logged more starts than Jimmy. But his health is a concern and I think they feel like they have built a team that can win even if Jimmy goes down but Mullens stunk it up and Beathard is a 3rd string for sure.
If you miss out on the top guys the only 2 left to work with are Mac and Trask to be Jimmy's backup(imo). The other guys will take longer to develop and won't help next year if Jimmy goes down again. To me, both Mac and Trask are in the 15-32 range and you never know when a team will strike to grab them. Too many teams at the back end like Colts or Pitt or Washington etc... You would have to trade back into round 1 like we did with Brandon Aiyuk but you are playing with fire that some other team grabs your QB.
Some other zoners might know more but maybe there is a QB on another roster that we can trade for ala Steve Young on Tampa. Not a vet like Stafford or Ryan but someone that Shannahan might have been high on in the previous drafts but another team doesn't value them the same where they drafted them.
Every other position seems to have competition at their position... To have to fight to be the starter or iron sharpening iron. The QB position doesn't seem to have that. It's just pray that Jimmy doesn't get hurt and even if he is healthy, hope that he develops into a franchise guy.
As of right now I would go Mac Jones at 12. You can try for a trade back but at 15 it's the Pats and at 17 it's Vegas ad then Washington at 19. Free agency will change things. The Pats could pick up Stafford and then a trade back for us is less riskier for us.
On a side note... I know people will freak out about Mac at 12. Any other year I would as well. We would have done the same as Niner fans if we had taken Mahomes at 3rd overall instead of Solly. People would gripe that we could have traded back and added picks.
If as a team we get our guy then I am fine with him at 12 or 17, etc... I'm cool as long as Shanny and company decide this is who they want. Most fans look at Mac Jones and say he's boring, Very Vanilla, like Daniel Jones or Justin Herbert. Jones reminds of a non flashy guy that just works hard. His pass in the playoff game against Notre Dame, where he threw it to the front pylon was amazing! perfectly on time and accurate. I think I heard a stat that since they began keeping QBR ratings in college, Mac Jones has the highest number for a QB ever?!?! The dude seems like he's all about football and just gets the job done. He's very smart and accurate with the ball. His deep passes get there fast and on time. That's tons of YAC with Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle! He also seems to perform just fine with the pressure of big games and playing at Alabama. That's another positive for me.

I think the guy that could fall is Trey Lance. Even past our pick. He just hasn't played that much football and he comes from poor competition. I know there is high reward if he works out but it's very risky.

Agreed on both counts. Was pretty much my thinking when I commented.
Interested to see teams approach this year. Draft is a crapshoot at the best of times, but with the disrupted college season teams may be a little more risk reluctant than previous years.
Also wouldn't shock me if teams look to invest draft picks in proven talent with so many teams looking to figure out their roster and cap in 2021. Surprise cuts/trades will happen.

Why... deep throw accuracy and great accuracy at every level, unlike jimmy, anticipation is great and can work the pocket to allow protection around him keep the pocket clean long enough, great vision to see the open man.
another later option that is more of a back up is Shane Buechele from SMU, 6'1 200 lbs, threw for 3093 yard, 23 TD's 6INT's, has a strong arm and good pocket awareness and can feel pressure and get out and run it or throw from awkward angles to get a completion. Even with a strong arm his ball kinda wobbles, doesn't have a nice spiral, so maybe that's mechanics and can be fixed? Also makes some throws into tight pockets that are probably INT's at the NFL level, but the pluses out weigh the minus' with some coaching and development.
I don't think Buechele has the arm or physical talent. He couldn't beat out anyone at UT (none of whom were great pro prospects, including Ehlinger imo) so transferred to SMU.
Yeah he had ups and downs at UT, some great games and beat better teams with lackluster WR talent, but his injury is what kept him from continuing as the starter and then he transferred to SMU. He had Roche and Roberson and showed much better QB play, not saying he's a starter by any means but he does def have a good arm and can deliver the deep ball and is athletic enough to move around the pocket and keep plays alive, just needs more development and that's all you can ask for a backup QB3.

2. I have zero confidence in Jimmy staying healthy
3. I do not believe Jimmy is a FQB nor the long term answer for us
all of this ^^ It is the reason I said Mac in your poll bc he is the highest rated QB on my board from your list.

Only way Mac Jones makes it to the 2nd round is if he blows the combine/interviews/pro day. He might not even be there when we pick at 12 but he for sure will be picked at the end of the 1st to get that 5th year option if he were to last that long. Dude is spot on a Matt Ryan.

Just take Mac with our first pick— maybe we get a baby trade down of a couple spots for a 3rd or 4th. Jimmy gets another shot with added pressure and Mac gets a year to learn. We can upgrade OL, DB and DE with a cheap vet or two (hopefully finding a way to keep Verrett and Hyder), and the rest of our draft picks. Just seems like the simplest best strategy IMO

Not that I'd be mad if we trade up for Wilson. It's just gonna mean we don't upgrade as much or at all on the other positions we need (since we'd be giving up a glut of picks)

Interesting, you have some real life exposure... so he's closer to 6 foot then I'm guessing? Thanks for the input I stand corrected
