The combine was best for us and the home arm chair GMs. It was filler for the down months of nfl scheduling. We probably did pick some people who didn't deserve it due to an outstanding combine like Mays.
The first combine was a group called Lesto that became Blesto and then Blesto-V. It stood for Bears, Lions, Eagles, Steelers and Vikings talent organization. They pooled their resources and information as a way to try and get an advantage over the other teams. Tex Schramm of the Cowboys was instrumental in getting a league wide scouting combine that started in 1982. The networks quickly realized that anything to do with the NFL was good TV so it became the event it is today.
