What is the best use of our 2021 first round draft pick?

What is the best use of our 2021 first round draft pick?

Watson!
Bpa, or if we can.... Trade down a couple times and load up the next two drafts. We could trade down a couple slots and snag some very needs extra picks.

Imo it's looking more and more like we will need a left tackle tho. Not good. We really need to keep Williams.

But we will need to reload the secondary, o-line, dl depth, lb depth etc. the extra picks helps us find some gems that can help.

We should only "sacrifice" if there's QB they believe in. Otherwise I hope they nail this draft regardless.

Highly doubt we draft a QB at 12. Unless by some crazy miracle one of the top 2/3 fall, it will be BPA that fits our need.
Lots of needs in this team.

I'm thinking it will be OL or Surtain at 12
Just draft Mac Jones at 12. History says 5 quarterbacks aren't going in the top 11, so probably no need for additional picks.

We'll win a Super Bowl when Kyle can run his offense. Clearly, he doesn't trust Jimmy. Too many wtf plays, and absolutely can not hit the deep ball, which makes Every opponent "make Garoppolo beat us" and play short against the run and short and medium passes. Jones Can hit the deep ball, reads defenses, makes very few mental mistakes, and has a Great TD to INT ratio. He does All these things better than Jimmy. Plus, we keep Much more of our team together if we replace Jimmy's cap number with a rookies.

Even if we keep Gimpy Jimmy, seems to me it's a no brainer we need a better bench than Mullens and Beathard.

To me, this draft pick is just too obvious. If Mac is there, Take Him. Let Kyle be Kyle. You know he wants to do things he's afraid to do with Jimmy, and I don't believe he wants to lay his career and legacy on never feeling comfortable enough with his quarterback to play his offense.
Unless Wilson or maybe Lance is on the board I'm all for trading down a couple times to the late 1st early 2nd.
If we wind up spending all our draft picks on OL and DB I will not be mad.
This just feels like a prime opportunity to get potential FQB in the top 10. They're clearly comfortable with JG as a floor, so they're in perfect position to develop a guy like Lance or Wilson without hurting their playoff chances.
I don't feel like there is another position that's a perfect fit at #12, so there isn't a clear sacrifice, as long as they don't sell the farm to move up. A lot of people think we should go CB, but the FO has clearly demonstrated that they don't value CBs high. Lynch's philosophy is to prioritize the front 7. Their highest pick was Ahkello, and there was NO ONE at CB on the roster at that point.
Our biggest current "hole" is IOL, and I think day 2 is usually the best time to get those guys.
The biggest risk, and it's a big risk, is that it's going to be so much harder to evaluate these guys this year. QB, above any other position, requires you to spend time with a guy and have a strong sense of his personality. I think there's a chance this class is being very overrated due to the lack of crowds at games and the recent success of toolsy players like Mahomes, Allen, Murray, etc.
Mac Jones at #12 is insane, the media is shooting that guy up draft boards lately for no reason. Spending a day 2 pick on a QB is a waste of a pick unless you expect him to be a backup. Non-1st round QB's have almost no chance of being quality starters, and even less chance of being top 10.
The only obvious alternative to me is if they don't resign Trent, so they'd go OT.

I would lean best player available and not reach on position. But if QB is there and worthy of the #12 pick I would pick it. Because we really need that and this won't get better until we do. Like I said it's got to be one that falls to us that is worthy of that pick. Otherwise maybe pick a guy you can develop in the 2nd round.

This is insane. The guy is the National Champion, and have you even looked at his stats? I know he's had a good team behind him, but he also played good teams, and the guy is Awesome.

I've just got to think this comes from your bias for athletic quarterbacks. But, Kyle has said the problem with athletic quarterbacks is that they've been the best athlete on the field their whole lives (now they're not), and his experience is that he can't keep them in the pocket going through their progressions without them tucking and running. Just like he says of offensive linemen, big is good, but they've got to be fast, and there aren't many of those, and the draft capital is too high to get many of them. Having an athletic quarterback is also a plus, but again, trying to find one that stays in the pocket is tough. Here's the facts. Kyle has a system that he thinks will generate an open receiver virtually every play, and he wants a quarterback to stand in there and find him, quickly. He's not a stupid coach that wants to have his quarterback bail him out with athleticism. He puts pressure on defenders, so that whatever they decide to do will be wrong, provided his quarterback reads the defense and makes them pay for their "bad" decisions.

I guess the question becomes do you want to roll the dice with Kyle, and if so, give him what he needs to run his offense. Jimmy is not that with all of the wtf plays, no deep ball touch to force the defense to back off and spread out over every blade of grass, too many unseen open receivers, and all the wtf plays (again, I know) that makes him call plays like he doesn't trust his quarterback. Or do you want an athletic quarterback you can stand up and cheer for his individual spectacular plays, but is more defensible if he's not the assassin to be cool in the pocket and make whatever you do wrong. These are the guys that last through a post season run, and year after year. If that's not what you want, it's not only Mac Jones you don't want. You don't want Kyle. That means you trade huge capital on a quarterback and gut your team, and that's not a formula for longevity for a coach. Good luck.

I'm gonna roll with a smart coach and a smart quarterback.

And I didn't know Mac Jones is going to be a second rounder.

He's not going in the 2nd round, he's going in the 1st round and possibly high 1st.

I don't have many comments here so I can't back up this statement: I generally HATE running QB's. I think they are incredibly overhyped and I root for them to fail from the day they're drafted. I'm one of few who thinks Deshaun Watson is overhyped. So for Lance, you can take away his running ability and I'll feel the same about him (he's actually not the best scrambler). I like how calm he is in the pocket, he runs a complicated pro-style offense, he displays great football IQ at times, and I like his maturity and personality from what I see in press conferences. I really like his footwork and that he constantly works to improve. You can see deliberate changes in his mechanics from game to game, so he wants to learn. He also has flaws right now that I hate, like accuracy and his movement in the pocket. He has a lot of room to grow and he demonstrates a strong desire to grow. I do have a preference for arm strength, I wouldn't call that 'bias.' I think we've all forgotten what that word means.

Mac Jones is phenomenal at progressing through his reads, he has a Matt Ryan-level football IQ, and his footwork and mechanics are very good. However, there is the athleticism issue. I don't knock him for not being Russell Wilson, I prefer a QB who uses subtle moves to find the soft spots in the pocket. But I think his athleticism is bad enough that at the pro level it becomes a big disadvantage. There is no crispness to his movement, when he hits the last step of his drop it's a very slow bounce. If you watch Brady and Peyton's college tape, they were a lot crisper in their movement than Jones. So where can improve? He already has the mental side down, but he can't improve the natural traits.

To say Mac Jones had a good team is wrong; he had one of the best teams in the history of college football. When I watch his tape, I see throws that make me say "good throw," but nothing that makes me say "NICE THROW!" He's draft-able, I'd draft him to be a solid backup. But if I have to use pick #12 on him that's a HARD pass.
The only corner I want at 12 is Caleb Farley. For some reason I'm not big on Surtain and I think I like Horn more than him. I really like the depth in the 2nd-4th rounds though.

Fixed it for you!

The problem is Kyle. He likes pocket passers.
You can only put together a realistic choice after your free agents are signed and any significant trades are done.

I think that's an exceptional post, almost exactly how I feel about the QB class, I'm getting the Mac Jones hype, he basically took a slightly worse WR corps than Tua had and took it to another level. Mobility aside I can't see where Tua is better, so if he's top 5 (wasn't in my eyes) Jones should get top 15 love.

I'm with you on the rest of your post except that I'd also mention the pass catchers, and I say that because I include Pitts, all 4 should go, but bar Chase I'd strongly consider the other 3 if they fell.

I'm fine if they go mid round CB's, but they better get 2 of them or bolster that pass rush again.
I really like the theme of BOI's post, though it's a bit too strong for me. Absolutely right about Kyle wanting to win in structure, and wanting a QB who will get to the best part of his play.

The issue is, and I think McVay has learnt this, is that the defense can win and take away the early parts of your play. That's cool if you have a stud O-Line, but if you haven't the play is broken.

Now is the part where your conversations meet, a Mac Jones, Brady will throw it away and live to fight another down.

A Jimmy will play some hero ball and throw into coverage

A Lamar or Kyler will run and try to get some yards.

The best players Mahomes, Rodgers, Russ Wilson, Deshaun Watson, scramble around give their receivers time and kill you down the field. That's what you pay for, that's the modern NFL, get with it or fall behind.
