What is the best use of our 2021 first round draft pick?

I still think you're missing my point. It's not about traditional, pocket, running or mobile.

It's all about in structure and out of structure.

A playcall has a primary read based on the coverage or leverage of the defender, you then go through the progressions, which in most systems is linked to how many steps a QB drops. Once he's gone through these the ball should be out. That's structure.

After this point the playcall is broken and you're out of structure, the misconception is that if you can operate out of structure, you can't work within it. This is simply not the case, it just takes a special QB to excel in both areas, and if you can you're practically unstoppable.

It's been really quiet at the 49ers headquarters. Can teams sign or negotiate with players that were on their team last year or do they have to wait until March 17 like the rest of the league. Are they free agents now or does that happen on March 17. I was trying to find the rules and I couldn't find anything that clarified that.

I get your point now, but I still end up in the same basic place when it comes to drafting one of these QBs.

I don't think many people automatically assume that if you can operate out of structure, you can't operate within it. I think, however, there are a lot of people that are skeptical of the ability of many of these QBs to operate well enough within structure to justify a high pick. How many "out of structure" guys who are good enough "in structure" come around every year? Maybe one?

This is the best I could find:

My take is that they everyone has to wait until March 17ish to talk, and signing can begin two days after that. If that is true, I wonder when the date was when teams were no longer able to talk to their current players about new contracts?

I'd be happy with the best CB or OL on the board at #12. Both are needs...and there's some excellent players at all positions. I'd rather see the Niners address these priorities rather than take a QB in the 1st rd. After seeing him in the Sr Bowl, I think QB Kellen Mond would be a good pick in either the 2nd or 3rd rd. He's a guy they could develop to become a starter or worst case be a talented b/u with size.

Cool, glad we're on the same page.

Well yes, it's rare and difficult to find, as BOI pointed out, generally that guy is such a great athlete that he doesn't learn to scramble, and the coach just gives them a simple hi lo read and tells the to take off if it isn't there.

Zach Wilson has demonstrated this ability and should be too of the board, however if he's unattainable you've got to sit down with Lance & Fields and gauge their ability and willingness to adapt to a new style of play.

Hey, don't force it if it's not there, but both have flashed enough potential to be worth the discussion.

If not you can fall back to the "traditional" guy or pass completely

I can dig it.
1. In a trade for Deshaun Watson
2. In a trade up for Zach Wilson
3. In a trade up for Trey Lance
With the expected signings (Mack, Williams, Verrett, Ebukam, et al) what are the needs now?

K'Waun replacement but that does not necessarily mean in round one. A pass rushing Edge? QB of the future? Another OW like Kyle Pitts or Devonta Smith?
If it is not a QB then we should keep building up the trenches
Mack snaps the ball to Mac....

That's the beauty of it, just pick the best player.

Yikes. I suspect we'll see a ton of local McDonald's commercials if we draft Mac.
