He's very good and could provide a deep threat for us. He's a great route runner and has great hands. He is ultra productive. The problem is he will probably be gone before our pick. Also we quite frankly don't utilize our deep threats that well anyway. Plus we have enough smaller WR's. I think this team could use a 6'5" 230 lbs. WR. Every other team in the league has that it seems. But we seem to eternally like smaller WR's. I would like to see 1 big guy on this team who can go and get the jump ball in a crowd and muscle guys for the ball. A little contrast and something different from what we have would be great.

Smith isn't your traditional deep threat. He's not Desean Jackson, he's a lot closer to prime Antonio Brown in terms of his route running and technique being so on point that he just regularly beats DB's off the line. As long as his body holds up he projects to legit #1 WR status in the NFL.

I agree that a big target receiver is more of a need. I think Smith will have a nice career but he's too much like what we have already. I wouldn't ind having him but this team has bigger needs. If the had a strong arm QB like Allen, Mahomes or Herbert than his deep threat would be more legit.

We have a guy that's 6'4", 250 lbs with 33 1/8" arms and a 35-inch vert:
But dialing up "jump balls" is not what Shanny does, tho. He did it SOME with Julio in Atlanta, but even then, it was far from a staple.
Shanahan's line of thinking is likely, "Why throw a jump ball and risk an INT when I can scheme someone wide open?"

Toss in Aiyuk with a 128" Broad jump, 40" vert, and 33 1/2 arms We see him on the field he's WAY faster than his 4.5 40 he ran while injured at the combine.

Yup, we have "jump ball" guys, but this isn't a jump-ball offense.
This is a scheme and execution offense. And nobody has been able to shut it down, so miss me with any complaints about how you wish we had a basketball team of WRs to throw 50-50 fade balls to.

I remember how everyone wanted Mims for that reason and Ruggs for his pure speed and I'm like...
Aiyuk is the best fit by far
If you don't have YAC you're not playing for Kyle.

Damn it would be so hard to pass up this guy if he's miraculously there at 12 but I'll be surprised if Miami passes him up at 3 with them trying to do everything to get Tua help

He gets a lot of RAC but it's not from breaking tackles which seems to be the direction Kyle has been going lately

I bet this is Shanny's favorite WR in the 2021 draft:
Kadarius Toney has declared for the 2021 NFL Draft, per @Brett_McMurphy
— PFF Draft (@PFF_College) December 28, 2020
Toney is the most elusive WR in the class (39% forced missed tackle rate) pic.twitter.com/vGoPyXo5CK
Kadarius is like a fusion of Deebo and Aiyuk with a dash of Tavon Austin

Agree, we need size in the WR corps. IF Juaun Jennings emerges as something resembling the beast he was at Tenn and Hurd can actually stay healthy we could have the big WR thing covered. Of course, that's a big if...I feel pretty good about JJ's future, but very unsure about Hurd's. If we had Watson or another starting QB who could get the ball downfield with accuracy, I'd feel better about taking Smith. Since we don't, I'd rather see Lynch take Amari Rodgers later in the draft to give us a stout slot WR. He'd add speed and toughness to a position woefully lacking in those traits.

Watching Devonta atm...For a guy that probably weighs around 165 lbs, this dude has a giant set of balls. He works the middle with zero fear. The way he carries his speed through breaks is crazy. If you're not being physical with him from the snap, he's basically unguardable if given space.
It's hard not to love the guy. Just based on his tape, he's one of the safest picks in the draft. But he's still around 165 lbs. I don't know how you reconcile that given the tiny track record of dudes that size.
