If you could go back in time do you still want the Niners to beat the Card on December 26t

i was so pissed off when the Niners beat the Cards. People lambasted me on the Zone stating you always play to win. I call BS on that. If the Niners lost they would have been drafting 7 or 8. One of the 3-5 qb's would have fallen in their lap. They would not have had to trade a 3rd and two future ones.

This is only my opinion. But the Niners LOST big by winning a scrub game.
Why would the players who actually play the game would want to lose? What is the benefit to them when over 1/4 of them won't be on the team the next year. Even more if the coaching staff changes.
This team will never accept losing. Winning games always helps, keeps everyone on board and sends out signals to future free agents and the whole league, that even when beaten up and with nothing to play for we can win.

Kept them out of the playoffs as well which might destabilise the whole thing by getting people fired next year.

If I could go back in time, I wish Shanahan should have taken Mahomes instead of drafting a bust in Solomon Thomas with the #3 pick so that we wouldn't have to spend an extra 2 x 1st and 1 x 3rd now to trade up.

But, about that Cards game? No doubt we should have tanked. Look at us now, we have no 1st round picks for the next 2 years.

The trade would have still cost the extra 1sts, we'd have either got to keep the 3rd, or we'd have got a 4th or 5th back on one of the years.

Losers lose

But yes Mahomes would have been the hindsight change.

I came close to wanting it at the time, but suggested it was too much of a risk.
If Kyle wants Mac, 7 or 8 would probably have been high enough.

I don't think a team should ever actually tank, your players should be on the field trying to win at all times, that's just a basic respect for the game.

That said, Kyle could have made some different decisions, resting players who probably could have used some R & R time, or playing some backups to see which of them was worthy of starting in the future, nothing wrong with that, it's to make your team better in the future and to gain intel on which free agents we could hope to replace internally.

As a fan, I was rooting hard for us to lose, wanted that high draft pick. Now we have one (and that's exciting), but we had to overpaid for it, bummer.
Winning was dumb. But understand teams don't play to lose.

If they had managed to lose that game AND to the Rams at least once, they'd be picking where they are now. No trade up needed. LOL
Screw those picks...they'll be in the high 20s anyway. And only two, not three. We got one back, and it's #3. Picture the picks being Solomon Thomas and Rashaun Woods. We won't even miss them.

What do you mean? We had the #2 pick before Chicago traded with us to go up to #2. There wouldn't have been any trade needed to draft Mahomes. Mahomes was taken at #10.

He means trading from 7 to #3 this year would have still cost picks.

Yes, you could hold at 7 and probably get a QB. But can you get the QB you wanted? That's a big difference.
Did you want to see the Cards in the playoffs? No f**kin thanks
If they draft Mac jones then yes, they basically wasted three first rounders instead of wasting just one first rounder had you lost.
No. That's a losers mentality. These guys are paid to win football games regardless of the situation.
Yeah the Eagles benefited from dropping that week 17 game to get some extra draft capital on their trade down with Miami. But players where not happy, and everybody in the country said it was a losers move.
There is a culture of winning no matter what. Draft picks are always a crap shoot.

If there's one time I would've wanted them to lose it was 2016 against the Rams. The team was going to get rebuilt and Myles Garrett would have been a fantastic first pick. The culture was changed with Shanahan and Lynch so it wouldn't have mattered.

I'm talking about this trade, from 9 to 3 if we lost to the Cards, it wouldn't have been much different.

The Mahomes thing was an afterthought.
