In January, Mac Jones was predicted to be a late 1st / early 2nd pick. There was some talk about him possibly going to the Patriots, but absolutely nobody had him as a top 10 pick until we traded up. As soon as we traded up, Chris Simms, Matt Maiocco, and others that are well-connected to the 49ers started saying that they are almost certain that we're taking Jones.
Are we to believe that's all just a coincidence? Or that it was just a good guess based on Shanahan having a fetish for unathletic QBs that look like Kirk Cousins?
I hope the pick isn't Jones, because if it is it will say so much more about Shanahan and our FO than it does about the quality of any of the available QB prospects and it won't be anything positive.
If it is in fact Jones then I think the leak was intentional and clear defiance from the FO at odds with Kyle. Seems pretty clear they've disagreed on many of Kyle's offensive reaches who by now should have his draft day keys to the facility revoked.
I just honestly don't buy that the team would invest 3 first rd picks + a 3rd on a player that the coach and FO are at odds over. It's one thing to reach at your spot in the 1st (McGlinchey), move up in the 2nd (Pettis), 3rd (Beathard), and 4th (Joe Williams) for guys who present 0 value at the pick but this would be next level. I just don't think you do that for a guy that didn't even have a draft grade going into a shortened weird COVID season. If anything I'd discount this year, not over-emphasize it.
