This is where I'm at. Kyle and Lynch put Jed through a test before agreeing to come to SF.

"I made a big deal that this stayed quiet," Lynch said. "First of all, you know what I was doing? Part of the rumors are things fly out of that building. So I wanted to see could I trust this building, you know? And so that was part of my thinking."
-------------------------

So what we are implying here with, "Mac to the 49ers a done deal" is that this front office, that prioritizes being mum about things, allowed the biggest decision that they are about to make to be leaked out of headquarters?

100% this. I bought into the hype initially re MJ. I now firmly believe MJ will not be the pick. I think it's Fields. I can see Lance, though I would be surprised. This all assumes TL and ZW go one-two respectively.

This is why the zone has been so comical since the trade. 1) thinking that anything is set in stone weeks before the draft and 2) thinking that this front office would leak anything... especially this early.

With a pick like this everything will be kept as secret as the access codes to fort knox. Now if something comes out the night before or the morning of the draft... then maybe there MIGHT be some legitimacy. Until then its all speculation.

My thinking is that it is either Wilson or Fields. More often than not it's the guys that were considered to be among the best at the end of the season that still tend to get drafted before those who are considered the best after pro days. During the season it seemed like Lawrence was clear cut #1, Fields arguably #2 and Wilson was #3, Jones at #4 as the stereotypical "safe pick" and Lance #5 as the potential phenom with the most risk... or swap him with Jones for the risk/reward factor.

All signs point to the Jets picking Wilson but there are many traits to Fields that a GM could fall in love with over WIlson. It will be interesting to see what chatter comes out of new york in the next couple weeks.

The Niners are super secretive, yet everyone, and their mother, knows immediately who the Niners are going to draft after the trade. Seems a bit fishy, given that Kyle is the kind of guy who wants to get the edge in every possible way. They gain nothing from teams knowing who they want to pick. Just smells like a smoke-screen and won't believe who they are picking until they make their pick.

We knew Solomon was the pick as soon as it was reported that he was classmates with Lynch, months before the draft.

This is not true at all. I remember. It was far from clear.

I remember mocks were all over the place that year. A lot of mocks had us taking ST, Foster, Adams, Trubisky, hell even CMC with the 2nd overall pick.
Its going to be Jones. It makes sense, he fits and that's that.

Unless, of course, it is Fields.
Ohhhh we gonna see some backpedaling now?

Schefter doesn't just make stuff up out of thin air. He deals with owners/GM's/head coaches/agents/league office. He's the type of reporter that gets "approved leaks" from teams.

So either:

a) Someone very high up in Ninersworld told him it's Mac Jones because they plan on picking him.

b) Someone very high up in Ninersworld told him it's Mac Jones as a smokescreen.

My head tells me it's Mac Jones. But my gut tells me something seems a little fishy in all this. We'll see come draft day.

More likely IMHO, some OTHER team is convinced the 49ers are taking McCorkle.
One other possibility: a SCOUT found out Shanahan wants McCorkle, so he's leaked it in hopes of the fan backlash convincing Lynch and Jed to convince Shanahan not to take McCorkle.

Of course that's nonsense.

I want to give a story about the drafting of Alex Smith. The 49ers, leading up to the draft were talking about drafting Aaron Rodgers. So the rest of the league was talking about trading up to #2 to get Alex Smith. The 49ers noticed the way the rest of the league was thinking, and switched to Alex Smith first to get someone to trade for the pick, and then they opted to actually select him #1 overall.

The funny thing would be if Kyle/Lynch are doing the Mac Jones whisper campaign to keep everyone in the dark on who they plan to pick, and the Jets then convince themselves that they should be picking Mac instead of Zach Wilson.

I don't remember anything like that. My recollection is Nolan made the final call on Smith over Rodgers because he thought Alex would be less turnover prone. Nothing to do with other teams assessments or the niners wanting to trade the pick.

Solomon was the overwhelming consensus pick for us at #2 that year. When the bears traded with us lynch said to Shannahan is it for Thomas? Shannahans response was it has to be a qb.
I still think this whole thing started with Simms. People like Maiocco who know Simms is close to Kyle ran with it which in turn led everyone else to run with it. Either that or there is a leak, it's impossible to know. If there's a leak it's also impossible to know if it's legit in which case is it intentional or did it get out without Kyle and Lynch's permission? Or is it an intentional smokescreen to maybe just show the nfl you guys will never know where our minds at... We're an enigma and our leaks can't be trusted.

This is high level chess. As such we'll never get answers, we'll always be guessing.
The Niners don't leak their draft picks...especially at QB. Personally, I think this whole Mac Jones thing is tremendously over-hyped. I seriously don't see them drafting him. Not with Fields and Lance most likely being on the board at #3. One thing to remember is there'll be other teams wanting to trade up to get a QB...NE being one of 'em. Jones might be a fit there. We'll see. In the meantime, all the Mac Jones supporters should be prepared to be disappointed on draft day...at least in terms of coming to SF.

I definitely think someone leaked something to Schefter. It could be someone in the building that's not happy Shanahan won't pivot off Jones.

I remain unconvinced that the decision is 100% made yet. And if it is, I would be amazed if it has got any further than Jed, Shanahan, Lynch, Peters and Marathe. And they are not leaking.

under the previous regime, everything leaked and we became accustomed to it. I am glad to see that this team is watertight now, if anything is leaked it is deliberate.
