Day 2 Draft Grade

I made this a poll, but what I am really looking for is the draft experts on this board to share what they think of the 49er selections. From a lay person perspective, the 49ers hit on multiple areas of need, but I have no clue on whether the ones they selected are good, or a value for where they were picked. If I were to nitpick, I would complain that they didn't grab an OT which is where the draft was strong from what I have heard, but spending a 2nd for an interior lineman was definitely a greater need.
First time in a long time I've been happy with all the picks after day 2 is done. And for people not liking the Sermon pick. I get it, but honestly, they need a bell cow running back. Feel like our guys just can't stay healthy and on the field.

Just gonna get this in early — fans in general ballyhoo too much about value IMO, if the guy ends up a good player, it doesn't matter if you got him in the 2nd instead of the 3rd or the 3rd instead of the 4th, lol.

I like many expected a CB or Edge or WR before RB, but Sermon looks like he could be great for us, Wilson and Mostert both get hurt and are on one year deals, we love to run and stay balanced so it makes a ton of sense.

we all wanted an IOL, we got one, dude looks like a mauler and good in pass pro, as long as he turns out, what more dyou want,

and then we got a CB like we all wanted, sure it wasn't necessarily the guy we wanted but he looks pretty good, I can see the talent, supposedly he was a Peters pick and he's basically our top scout.

so, what do I know, but I think we did pretty good, despite it wasn't necessarily the names or guys we'd talked about on here
Same answer I give every year: I'll let you know in 4 years.
If all the day 2 picks are all regularly active on game days and starting or contributing (while not effing up) then it'll be a B. If they excel it'll be an A+.
I was down on the Sermon pick until I saw somebody point out that we have no RB's signed past 2021. It makes perfect sense. If he shows RB1 skills then we'll have a young RB under team control for a few seasons.

C+ for now. I think KS is happy. Trying to return to that power ground game. Just don't think they got great value with the picks.

I thought Banks was early but I like him. I think they may have been looking to move back farther but couldn't. Regardless if he becomes a starting guard this year than it is mission accomplished. Addressed a big need.

Confused by the Sermon pick. Not high on it. I like him as a player. I think he contributes this year. And if Lance, Banks, and Sermon come out at the same time we got some big time ground power. Maybe goaline or red zone packages. Just don't find RBs to be great value and would have rather gone edge or kept the picks.

CB was a good call at 102, I just am not big on Ambry. Plays underweight. Weak tackler. Good ball skills and speed but the tape is just not that impressive to me. Seen 2 interceptions that looked nice but were on 4th downs were batting the ball down gives better field position. Looks unnatural returning kicks as well. Robert Rochelle anyone?

Lots of 5th rounder to parlay and move up. Could address the D line and bring in one more WR. Good moves there probably bring the total draft y up to a B.
This 49ers draft is turning into the 2017 draft. No starters, no value. If you're happy with the draft so far, you have homer goggles on.

I'd give it a C

Or maybe you have hater goggles on?

When you have a strong roster as we have you arent going to take a bundle of year one starters. Lance will start when he isxready,Banks will probably start pretty much straight away. Sermon will either start or contribute early.

What were you expecting?

What positions were available for a rookie to get drafted and immediately compete for? Guard, RB, CB. Oh snap, that's what they drafted.

I'm not sure about Banks starting. I think like most we could've gotten these cats later. Sermon rd 4 for sure I bet, and Banks rd 3.

in my opinion there was higher rated and good fits too on the OL ahead of Banks, and a CB over Sermon (like Molden) would've been solid. I truly believe Sermon could've been had in the 4th.
Lance; we'll see. keeping an open mind on this as the FO is infatuated with him and obviously know more than I/we do. Could have had a better, more ready player in Fields IMO. I know it was the day 1 pick, just mentioning it.

Banks; feel better after reading about the pick but still a head scratcher IMO. We could have had more dynamic/higher impact players at other positions. Notably WR/Edge. Two guys went directly after this pick I wanted and we passed for a guard. I know we needed to fix the IOL, so adding him with Mack in FA is solid.

Sermon; I like him and glad to add another dynamic back to our backfield. Still a head scratcher as shanahan seems to find guys that are undrafted and perform just as well in his system. Seems like a luxury pick and they apparently love him.

Thomas; he was the best available at his position IMO and has high upside. We needed a db..solid pick with upside. I seemed to always end up picking him in a lot of the online mocks I did.

We need to fill our 3rd WR role today. Shi Smith(deebos guy) and/or Cade Johnson would be nice. An edge would be nice too.

Ultimately we won't know for a couple of years, hope they all ball out and see dominate for years to come!

I don't know enough to comment on which IOL may have been better fits but I think Banks can compete for RG since there isn't a starter written in pen there.

Correct. I'm not hating im just being a realist. They traded back in the second when there was a lot of talent on the board, including samuel. They got a guard they probably could have got in the 4th They traded back for a fourth which they used with another 4th to get a rb they could have gotten in the 4th. Then they get a project cb.

With that said I won't know for 4 years, and the rest of the west sucks too.

My thoughts on what the picks mean:
1) JimmyG will continue to start while healthy, while Trey Lance learns the offense.
2) Lynch will not pay big $$$ to retain Mostert or Wilson in free agency next year.
3) Lynch may not be confident in resigning Tomlinson next year, so Aaron Banks is insurance.
4) Conversely, Lynch may be confident in the ability to sign Warner, since no LB selected.
5) Shanahan must be confident that Sanu has another year in the tank and Hurd will contribute, given the lack of a WR selection.
6) Shanahan must be confident that Bosa and Ford will remain healthy, and Ebukam will contribute, given the lack of an EDGE selection.
7) 85 players total, so I can see 49ers making all 4 remaining selections, most likely: NT, CB, TE, WR
