The one need the Niners HAVE to address in next year's draft is a primary kick returner. Don't mind having Aiyuk back there for punts, but our KR's (Cannon, Hasty, etc.) are woefully inadequate. Here are the position players at other positions of need who also have special teams ability:

CB
Marcus Jones Houston - PR and KR ability; true game breaker as a returner.
Mychel Wright Oregon - KR who averaged 27.7 per return

WR
Britain Covey Utah - anyone see the Rose Bowl? Enough said
Velus Jones Jr. Tennessee - can handle both PR and KR; second ranked PR in the nation
Ainias Smith Texas A&M - top 10 in the nation in PR

Anyone I missed?

Britain Covey will be 26 when he's drafted... I'll pass on him.

We would be drafting him as a ST KR and PR

so i dont mind his age at all

My point is that he's been at Utah since 2015... his numbers as a receiver and returner are unwhelming, he's in his physical prime and is a grown man playing against kids.. he's 5'7".. maybe. He might be OK as a one cut punt returner, but he's hardly anyone we should seriously consider drafting.

This is typical fan reaction and hype.

he is on the 2nd team returner of the year so he must be pretty good and he was chosen before the Rose bowl

Ok, so we should draft everyone on college all american lists? Come on now.

I am not expecting Covey to get drafted unless it's late on day 3 and more likely than that be an UDFA. His age doesn't matter to me as he is going to just play special teams in an ideal world. What I posted was a list of targets. The rest of the guys have real game plus ST ability. Covey is one trick pony, but has to be considered by any team looking for a potentially amazing return man.

im not syaing we use a high draft pick on him he shouldnt go above round 5 and at that point im taking him i think he will be a solid return man for at least 3-5 years and imo thats really worth the pick considering our returns this year and our SB window

im not hitched to him or anything so i would welcome any good return specialist im just saying hes a solid option

Nik Bonito (OLB/EDGE)
Oklahoma, 6-3/240
Day 2 prospect
- Haason Reddick/Azeez Ojulari type of speed rusher the Niners need opposite of Bosa.
I was watching some highlights of Boye Mafe. Looks pretty good, bit raw. Anyone know what round he will likely go in?

He should test quite well and was wildly productive. It's a deep class, but he's one of my favorites. I'd expect 3rd round

i havent seen any tape but at this point we dont need a raw EDGE we need a productive guy off the bat even if he is expected to have abit lower upside i would be ok with that

Ready-made edge rushers are hard to come by, especially outside of the top 50-60 picks. Mafe has plus-NFL level explosiveness and strength, and should be able to contribute as a situational guy early in his career. Id expect him to blow by some slower footed tackles.
wanted last year

Dude is gonna be a top 15 pick, which is pretty nuts for a center

Yeah he is insanely good. Maybe better than my draft crush Creed Humphrey from last year.

Nice prospect for the defense

One of the physical freaks of the draft. More of a designated pass rusher type not a 3 down option. Then again, that's what the Niners need. If anything, his stock will rise based on his offseason workouts, but he is a solid day two prospect.
