That's a good question. I think Brown is the better prospect. I suspect he will go higher in the draft and not be around at 100. So if I could have either, I'd go with the BPA in Brown. That being said, theres a good argument to be made that Martin is the better fit day 1. Brown is better near the line of scrimmage and peaking into the back field. He's better coming downhill or side to side and making plays. His coverage skills are better on a TE or RB. Very Hufanga like in that you want to give him some freedom to roam and crash plays, and we obviously already have the role filled. I think Martin is better suited for the nickel role. He can cover slot WRs. He's a little lighter and twitchier, although they both have great athletic profiles. A little quicker to close. Martin's 10 yard is 96% percentile. A little taller and bigger wingspan to defend passes in 1 on 1s. Both are questionable at FS to me.
Steve Wilks is known to heavily prefer the nickel package. He's had seasons where he played 80%+ of snaps in the nickel, so you're going to see alot of a 4-2-5 packages with 3 corners. That nickel corner is going to see alot of playing time, even on running downs. Adequate production out of that nickel spot is going to be paramount to the success of this defense. So when targeting a CB or S in the draft, the looming question is, how do the 49ers feel about Oliver, Womack, Hartsfield, etc, in that spot? If you let Jimmie Ward go and you signed Oliver with absolute confidence thinking this is the perfect guy for us, we're set here, Martin loses some value. If your looking to bring in more competition at that spot, Martin would be one of the better fits that might be around when we are on the clock.
