2023 Draft Prospect Watch List and Discussion

1) Blake Freeland OT
2) Zach Harrison Edge
3) Jartavius Martin CB/S
4 Hunter Luepke FB/TE
5) Marte Mapu LB/DB

I would be pretty happy if it fell this way.

I'm not as big on Freeland as most in here…but overall I wouldn't hate this draft. I'm not sure why they would draft a FB in the 5th? Dude won't make the roster and I don't see Juice going anywhere.

I think he would be a backup at TE and FB and the heir apparent to Juice. He would make the roster for sure if they draft him.

He will be riding the pine for almost a Steve Young length of time. Not worth it that early. I also don't see him.cutting it as a true TE. I'd love to groom a fullback, but not in favor of drafting them that early. With that said, I think Luepke absolutely would make the roster. Too bad Mitchell can't stay healthy and that we have TDP. Otherwise, he'd be on the game day roster.
The more I've looked into this draft, I think there are a lot of quality prospects in the 3rd-6th round. Maybe not many immediate contributors but quite a few guys worth drafting and developing.

Top end of the draft is light though. I don't suspect many stars will come out of it, but probably a lot of quality contributors

Yeah to me this draft is about restocking depth, and maybe finding a few guys who can step into starting roles in a year or two. This team has its organizational pillars locked up, so this draft fits very well with what we need just as long find functional players with down the road potential.

I just don't hope we try to stash some guys on the practice squad and they get poached because theyre too raw to keep on the active roster 😭.

that's a good problem to have but I just don't see us keeping 11 players. We May just take a bunch of guys we like and see who makes the cut and try to stash the rest and if we lose them, we lose them.

i suspect they'll use the additional ammo to nab who they really like and maybe some trade backs to add stock for next year.
My biggest question going into the draft would be this............. which Illinois safety would you pick if both Sydney Brown and Jartavius Martin are available in the late third? I think both of them have the requisite skill set to be a good to great safety in the Niners system. What do you think?
Niners going to select Gurvan Hall Jr. if you're wondering who's that… exactly! You'll get that Niners pick that'll make you scratch your head, so you'll start investigating the player.

Should have picked the one last year (Kerby Joseph) instead of TDP but I digress.

I'm right there with you. Joseph was a dog in his first year with the Lions. Guess having Jimmie Ward and Gipson got in the way last year.

I would go Martin cause he would compliment Hufs style of play. And he would bring versatility and the athleticism we don't currently have.
What's the story with Zach Harrison? Kid was a 5 star recruit out of high school, had a good but not great career at Ohio St. and fits the Niners profile of a 4-3 DE. Why is is every time I pick him in a mock he gets a lower grade than expected? Can someone please explain this to me?

Lack of production and poor agilities

That's a good question. I think Brown is the better prospect. I suspect he will go higher in the draft and not be around at 100. So if I could have either, I'd go with the BPA in Brown. That being said, theres a good argument to be made that Martin is the better fit day 1. Brown is better near the line of scrimmage and peaking into the back field. He's better coming downhill or side to side and making plays. His coverage skills are better on a TE or RB. Very Hufanga like in that you want to give him some freedom to roam and crash plays, and we obviously already have the role filled. I think Martin is better suited for the nickel role. He can cover slot WRs. He's a little lighter and twitchier, although they both have great athletic profiles. A little quicker to close. Martin's 10 yard is 96% percentile. A little taller and bigger wingspan to defend passes in 1 on 1s. Both are questionable at FS to me.

Steve Wilks is known to heavily prefer the nickel package. He's had seasons where he played 80%+ of snaps in the nickel, so you're going to see alot of a 4-2-5 packages with 3 corners. That nickel corner is going to see alot of playing time, even on running downs. Adequate production out of that nickel spot is going to be paramount to the success of this defense. So when targeting a CB or S in the draft, the looming question is, how do the 49ers feel about Oliver, Womack, Hartsfield, etc, in that spot? If you let Jimmie Ward go and you signed Oliver with absolute confidence thinking this is the perfect guy for us, we're set here, Martin loses some value. If your looking to bring in more competition at that spot, Martin would be one of the better fits that might be around when we are on the clock.
