Hunter Luepke-FB-North Dakota State

Question for you Phoenix. With 11 picks now heading into the draft, should the Niners draft a FB and a TE or is Luepke good enough to fill both roles?

I imagine that the 49ers and Shanahan would see him as a Juice replacement, even if you hold on to Juice another season, Luepke could contribute on special teams, you could even put him in at RB in goalline situations too.

As far as TE, with the bevy of late picks they have, that's something they could also address later on.

Oh NICE! Nice feet, hands and vision. Versatile and great blocker which we all know are prerquisites to Shany's offense. Mike Alstott size that can move, will he be there on one of our 3rd round comp?

I think he'd be around in the 3rd and that seems to me the realistic range for him, from mid 3rd to mid 4th round. Juice went in the 5th round and with the spread of the Shanahan offense around the league, there's going to be more demand for similar prospects. I'd feel a lot better about using a 3rd on Luepke, someone who has the skillset to be a versatile weapon in this offense and fits with the "positionless" approach far more than I did with them drafting standard, run of the mill RB's like Sermon and TDP.

Even with his skill set, Luepke is severely undersized to play as a full time TE. If this team wants to upgrade the offense, Luepke is a great pick. If the team wants to specifically upgrade at TE2, he's not the guy to do it.
This guy looks like he's really good but I bet he will get drafted in the top 3 rounds. Maybe if he's available with one of our comp picks. But I suspect he's a luxury pick for a team that already has Juice so we won't use draft capital on him.

I was about to suggest who would we be competing against for fullback, but you are right about how the offense is spreading. Id honestly be totally cool with Juice playing out his current deal and drafting Luepke. Or you just move on for the cap space when Luepke is ready. It will be very interesting to see how they approach this draft.
I havent started draft prep yet but I cant wait and this guy looks like a must draft! Juice has been one of the few great signings since I've been a fan, not to ever forget Cowboy and Larry Allen.
Need!!!

Luepke can do both

He's not going to hold up at TE in the NFL but his pass catching skills make him extremely valuable at FB, same as Juice.

I would take him but I suspect that he will go too early for us.

Same feeling here.

Ditto

Interested to see who the 49ers send. Several guys that would be plug and play from their offense to Shanahan's.
