there is a chance, maybe not a great chance, but a chance he does not go super early.
I missed 90% of the game today, but saw on the quick recap at the end of the game he got beat a few times. He is just in a unique situation....most of the time when we are talking elite CBs, we are talking about a dude that has help from the rest of the defense letting him get those long streaks of not giving up passes. Hunter is giving up passes every week, but the dude is also taking a bazillion snaps and the rest of that defense is not at his level...to be blunt he is not getting a ton of help. Unless we are talking Charles Woodson, we don't have a lot of two way players to compare him to. Hunter is not anywhere remotely the same level of player as Charles Woodson (but who is at the college level), but we can't really say hey this dude did this as a two way and did that in the NFL playing one side of the ball. It is hard to gage that. Yes he is a great athlete playing all those snaps, but we have seen the dude run out of gas in the 4th.
Hunter has avoid running any timed events up to this point, he has skipped them at every event that I can find..... only reason to do that is he knows he will turn in a slow time. He likely will avoid running at the combine too.
Personally, I could care less....I would drop the draft capital on him and not think twice. I think the dude is going to be a much....muuuuuchhhhhhh.....better Pro then he is as a college player. It is border line criminal how he is being used at Colorado. To me the dude is a Tier A+ Tampa 2 style CB, as a WR he is nothing special. There are probably 80 dudes you could drop into that offense and they would do similar stuff.
I think if the only thing Hunter had to worry about every day of the week is how am I going to be the best CB in college football today he would be turning more heads for the right reasons. It is no mystery that Hunter's best game came in the week he got back to basics and was primarily a defender.
Bottom line, as good as Hunter has looked, we have not seen the best version of him...the two way stuff is robbing us of that.
All we can do is hope the 49ers could get a dude as good as Hunter is, he is fantastic at exactly what the 49ers need a CB to be fantastic at.
