Javon Solomon-Edge-Troy

6'2" 250 Lbs
2023: 26 tkl, 16 sacks, 3 FF
Career: 88 tkl, 33 sacks, 5 FF, 1 INT

I don't think Javon fits what the team has historically looked for at the position, but with the trade for Randy Gregory who is a smaller guy, maybe this regime is having a change of heart when it comes to not confining themselves to specific positional archetypes. Built more like a 34OLB, Javon simply knows how to get after the passer. What he lacks in size, he makes up for with explosiveness, pursuit speed, lower body flexibility and motor. He shows some speed to power, but he plays for Troy against a lower level of competition - we should not expect it to translate to the NFL, or at least not at the start of his career. Also a consequence of his size, we should expect his utilization to be more like that of a Bryce Huff: a pass rush specialist. He can be effective vs the run if asked to penetrate and shoot gaps, but he should not be expected to reliably and consistently set a hard edge. But let him lineup wide 1v1 vs a tackle, or ask him to loop around and stunt into B gaps, and he can get to the QB.

He will be at the Senior Bowl, and will have a chance to raise his stock. As it stands, I'd estimate him as a 5th round pick. He is similar to Nick Herbig, who was a fan favorite for some around here, and who was drafted at the end of the 4th round. Some teams will automatically eliminate him from their board simply because of concrete size thresholds, but others will be more flexible to just draft good football players. If things work out, I project a career trajectory similar to that of Shaq Barrett.

I like his tape but his name is a red flag.

Literally a combination of our past two defensive lineman draft busts.

2 wrongs always make a right tho
Ultimately needs to be able to set the edge. We need to improve with that across from Bosa.

Maybe they still believe in Jackson, IDK.

Given our issues in the run game, I can't see this. I do think a Dee Ford like speed rusher is desired, but its all moot if they struggle to stop the run. I think they like Beal, but we'll see how much based in what type of edge rusher they draft. I'm expecting a player that can play DE on base downs and and maybe move inside on pass rushing downs. Our run game has gone in the toilet and the pass rush is mid.

With that said, if you are projecting 5th round, its a good spot for a player that will literally only have one job.

Oh, absolutely, we're talking about a day 3 draft pick for a designated pass rusher. I like Darius Robinson on day two for the archetype you speak of, which I agree we need. If I'm GM, in hoping the board falls such that I can double down at edge and double down at d tackle. We have 11 picks so gimme 3 OL, a CB and a WR too
