As for who they took with the third overall pick sometimes the deck is just stacked against you. The only way for that pick to have been successful in hind sight and make sense at the time based on need would have been picking a guy predominately mocked in the 10-20 range as the third overall. You put every other gm in that same exact spot and you compare results and you might not have a single case where somebody else does better than Solomon Thomas and a bunch of picks. Of course they have screwed up many high draft picks but this wasn't one of them. Stacked deck and still managed to come out ok.
Its wild that it didn't work out because based on his draft profile, he should've given us Arik Armstead production- elite run defender that can provide some pass rush. I don't fault them for the pick. Our run D was the worst ever, even worse than this year's. AA was trending towards being a bust. Trubisky wasn't the guy at QB. I'm not entertaining the Mahommes talk because no one had him there. The only other option was Watson and who would dare say that? For what it's worth, I wanted Derek Barnett lol. It had been so long since we had a pass rusher, Id have taken anyone.
With that said, Thomas is a bust. He gets a D as a pick. Rotational guy, but nothing more. The rotational part is why he is a D pick and not an F pick. It was their first draft pick though. His traits addressed our biggest need and he was a top 5/top 10 player coming out.
