My thing with Nolen is that I've got Harmon at a close enough grade without any character concerns, so you just go Harmon

Harmon only had one good year so he may have more room to grow. He's got the size and athleicism for sure.

IMO this gonna be more common with the NIL stuff in college happening all the time.
I mean Jalen Carter had some legit red flags and he's doing just fine. Why does Philly get to keep drafting these type of "charter issue guys" and get to prosper lol?
If SF's okay with it, then I'm okay with it. Get him around Warner, Bosa and Brock and I think he will be fine.
According to the reports, Nolen is quiet and awkward. Bosa is quiet too and a leader by example type. I don't think there would be much interaction going on between those 2.
The DL room really needs someone like Fred.It was a big mistake to get rid of all the vets if they want to bring in a guy like Walter Nolen. There's nobody in that room that will be on his ass.

That is true, but I think the NIL gives us little insights that shouldn't be ignored. Was Nolen getting away from A&M because their scheme sucked? Possibly or was it because he got more money to go to Ole Miss with them basically buying a D-Line?
How much of his freelancing was a green light from the coaches, how much was him trying to make himself look good?
Was he looking gassed because he plays so hard, lack of conditioning? Or lack of interest?
I felt like they rotated well with JJ Pegues and others so didn't think it would be that.
You're right though, homework is the key. Problem is you really need it from his position coaches or strength coaches, but will they tell the truth?
I'm pretty sure he got NIL money offers from a ton of college schools to transfer. He was the nations top recruit a couple yrs back. Unfortunately that's how things will be going in college…these kids play a sport where he can rip his knee at any moment so getting money matters.
All the other stuff, your guess is as good as mine. Thankfully they've been meeting with him to figure it out

Sounds like they might be interested in trading for some people during the draft…possibly bring in an older respected vet to the room on top of it.
I think the coach matters as well. You don't think Coach K would be on his ass?

The both had one good year and are both young. Honestly in an ideal world they're both on the board and you can trade back a couple picks and get one.
I do think Harmon is the "safer" pick

I could see Kocurek making or breaking a dude like Nolen. He could either forge Nolen into a monster, or make him go into his shell and tune out football. I also think he is going to be super busy trying to get 3+ rookie DL ready for the NFL season.
I wish Walter Nolen didn't have any football character concerns. Hard to get excited about drafting a dude that can potentially quit at any moment. I think the 49ers would be f**king stupid to draft anyone with that type of concern given their situation, but the talent and fit could be too much to resist for them.
also, I don't think the 49ers should look at the Eagles as an example since they're in a different situation. When the Eagles drafted Jalen Carter, they had leaders in the DL room like Fletcher Cox, Haason Reddick*, Brandon Graham, etc. The 49ers are trying to transition to a new core with very few vets, especially on the defensive side. There's quite literally nobody in the DL room except Nick Bosa.

That's why they're doing their due diligence. Could some of the scuttlebutt on Nolen be dramatized? Sure. That's why they need to figure it out.
If they feel good with it, I'm good with it…if they don't, well don't take him.

I thought the Eagles drafted Carter to replace Hargrave, sorta like what we were trying with Buck and Kinlaw.

I meant to type Haason Reddick. I had Hargrave on the mind because I was thinking about all the vets the 49ers ushered out the door this year.
Kinlaw was another guy with red flags that many of us on here were concerned about but the 49ers chose to ignore...it's looking more like Adam Peters had great influence in this pick, so hopefully, the 49ers are more prudent this time around.

Hargrave was gone when Carter got there. Cox/graham were still there.
I get having a vet room for these younger guys to understand everything and get put on the right path. I think they can still grab a mentor like DT after the draft in FA. Givens might not be the best pro, but he's worked his ass off to say in the league for the last 6 going on 7 yrs.

His red flags were his knees were made of mush lol. Let's stop drafting guys with injury concerns as well. FWIW I'm seeing Harmon might have some injury stuff as well

Kinlaw also had football character concerns. I vividly remember John Middlekauff reporting that his connections at South Carolina said they worried daily about Kinlaw's engagement in practices and meetings. Not too different from the s**t we hear about with Walter Nolen.
but yeah, 49ers really need to stop ignoring this s**t.

I agree that they're going to make a trade probably after the draft season settles. They have 11 picks next year I could see something similar to the Collin's trade.

Yeah I don't remember that. This is the closest thing I could find on Kin regarding that stuff
