why do we have the worst beat writers?
shouldn't we have intelligent sports journalists in SF covering the 49ers?

we have ZERO
and it's been the same f**king idiots for the past 10-15-20 years

There are many times actual NFL draft boards differ greatly from the media.

I've seen a bunch of people have Nolen rated very highly. I saw a tweet the other day where one guy had him graded as DL1...he actually had Graham as IDL3 behind Nolen and Harmon.

Found the tweet

You can of course question the scouting ability by this guy but the point is...it all depends on the POV.

Also our beat writers may get info from OUR team that national guys don't get.

Wouldn't you have to classify Nolan as a bomb/bust guy because of the supposed issue surrounding him? Personally I don't necessarily believe them but there are questions. Grant may be boom/bust as well but you can say that about a lot of these guys. Graham has some people questioning his size and body type to the point that he may slide back in the draft. Not a lot of sure thing can't miss players in this draft. Lot's of potential so you just roll the dice.

same, bigger and i think his ceiling is higher.

Yeah for sure but like you said, you can pretty much say that for any player.

Up to the team to get a proper read on the guy. Is he taking plays off cuz he was dealing with something? Is it a conditioning issue? Do we think our coaches/players can push him to give full effort?

We see a lot of players who get the "takes plays off" label who have excellent NFL careers(perhaps they mature, perhaps it's the whole now I'm doing this for a job thing) I believe Chris Jones had some of those same negatives.

This is also why the draft is so dang hard. You just don't know how these kids will react once they're in the NFL. The mental part of the process is so important. It's why you see guys with lesser traits/athletic ability but the right mentals have better careers than some of these uber athlete prospects who don't put in the same work off the field to improve/study.
In case anyone missed why a lot of us are out on Nolen:

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, "multiple" NFL scouts have expressed "maturity concerns" about Nolen. There was a situation at Ole Miss during the 2024 season that may have raised some eyebrows. Nolen appeared to suffer a lower-body injury late in the first half of the Rebels' game against Oklahoma on Oct. 26 and he sat out the second half. Speaking to reporters after the game, Mississippi head coach Lane Kiffin offered a cryptic response when asked if there was any concern about Nolen's health going forward. "I don't know. He wasn't able to go back in. I actually thought he was going to go back in and he decided that he couldn't go back in," Kiffin said. The Athletic's Dane Brugler noted the "interview process will be crucial to (Nolen's) final grade" because he played at six different programs in the past seven years dating back to his time in high school. According to Fowler, some scouting reports for Nolen mention he has a "history of walking off the practice field mid-session due to frustration."

Combine that with the fact he's been at 5 different schools in 6 years and you'll see the flags are there. I'd pass on him in the first but if he's there in the 2nd i'd take that chance on him.
The concerns about Nolen remind me of Robert Nkemdiche who had a ton of athleticism and talent but was plagued with questions about effort level and dedication. Nkemdiche at least was kind enough to confirm that he was a dumbass by falling off a balcony while drunk off his ass.
Wouldn't touch Nolan unless he somehow fell to the 3rd rd. There are just too many DTs in this draft to risk taking him at 11 or 43.

Talent is clearly there. If the team clears him given how they view guys who half ass it I would hope he shows up ready to dominate.

I can't imagine that our guys don't have access to behind the scenes stuff as they've done a pretty good job avoiding guys who don't work hard or do stupid stuff since Foster/Pettis. If they take him at 11 I'm confident the answers they got were a non issue or simply people putting out BS or blowing things out of proportion.

He won't be there at 43…if he is then those stories were true but I'm 100% taking the risk then and hoping him sliding lights a fire under his ass.

Yeah he wouldn't have fun with Puni in practice

this almost guarantees Howie Roseman will select him and he'll prolly be an All-Pro

Probably, but he'd be in a room full of Dogs, hard not to step up in that situation, if he didn't he'd ride the bench.

He'd be the best interior player in our room, where even half assing it would have him leading the rotation.

No, thanks
I've been critical of Nolan but I wouldn't take him off my board completely. I'd pass on him at 11 but if he's within striking distance of our 2nd I'd trade up and get him.

I just don't see him staying here for more than 4 years. He's a mercenary kind of player like Clowney's career became. Chase the money no matter what and as long as he's a decent player teams are going to offer him a lot of money.

I mean they kind of all are mercenaries as free agency drives that culture. But it seems from most folks in the know he's high maintenance regardless. I think I'd go for Harmon over him at this point.
