Browns defensive lineman Shaun Smith, who was heading into his third year with the team, was released Saturday, a source close to the situation said.

No reason was given for his ouster, the source said.

Smith (6-2,, 325) was a versatile lineman who could play end or nosetackle. Smith appeared in 11 games last season with nine starts. He totaled 47 tackles, including 22 solo.

But Smith's on-the-field accomplishments were overshadowed by a run-in with quarterback Brady Quinn in the weight room during which Smith reportedly punched Quinn in the face. Smith's representatives met with the Browns at the NFL Combine in February to determine whether or not the Browns wanted to keep him in light of the incident.

No we're not going to sign him, I think the club is fine with Franklin, Sopoaga and Balmer sharing time at the Nose.

He's average. I think we'd show interest in him if Franklin or Sopoaga were to suffer a serious injury in camp.

Look for the Broncos to seriously go after him though. Ronald Fields is not an ideal starting NT, and the rest of their 3-4 DL is very inexperienced.
He would be worth a look imo. hes still young, hes a prototypical nt. i say go for it and give him a shot and hope sing can straighten him out. brady quinn seems like a bit of a douche anyway so i dont really blame him.
