I just read the following article about 4 players from the Bears-niners game last week that were fined.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/11/20/four-players-fined-in-bears-49ers-game/
Bears RT Chris williams was fined for a late hit, Delanie walker fined for kicking another player, T. Brown for taunting, and Arnaz Battle for facemasking. I can understand the late hit and kicking another player but a bogus taunting call and facemasking? Are you serious?
Under Goodells watch the NFL seems to be fining players more than ever and IMO if it continues it is going to hurt the quality of play because players will be tentative to do anything because they will be in fear of getting fined. Is it Goodell that has been causing the increase? I don't thing the NFL is "dirtier" than it was when Roselle and Taglibue were comissioners. What do you guys think?

I've never heard of anyone being fined for a face-mask penalty.

So by that retarded logic, everyone that is penalized in a game should be fined... correct?

Just like I remember how Gore was called for a fifteen yard facemack penalty! After a twenty yard run when he was on OFFENSE. He stiff-armed the guy and next thing you know... facemask! ONLY time I seen that crap!

A few years ago I would've supported a fine for Kwame every time he was flagged for a false start or a hold. s**t he would've burned through his entire salary by November...

Goodell isn't letting them play the game liked they used to. The safety of a player is paramount, but man just let them play they're grown men. Money talks a lot in Goodell's world.

There's a reason why Goodell is being aggressive with these facemask fines and such though.
The NFL pension and disability insurance benefits are running out of money. Between 2008 and 2009 (or 07-08), the NFL lost 350 M dollars in the pension plan. About 80 M dollars went towards paying beneficiaries of the plan, and the rest was lost due to the economy and administrative fees.
With NFL Teams and the NFL trying to find any way to stop the bleeding, imposing strict fines and enforcing the rules to the T will be vital to try and reduce the amount of injuries, and clearly, lower the long-term expense of those plans.

If that is indeed why then the NFL should just close up shop. Because they are ruining the game.
