Clearly you havent been watching the 49ers the last 2 years. VD blows. Kap didnt kill his career, age did. When your only asset is your deep speed, you have nothing to fall back on when age starts slowing you down.

It's also getting glossed over that he had an 850 yard 13 TD season with kap in 2013.

Anyone defending VD is delusional. If you paid attention at all in the last 2 years, youd have seen a player with crap fundamentals lose his natural gifts, and have nothing to fall back on.

No more watching Vernon try to catch passes with his arms down like he was using a laundry basket. No more seeing the ball clunk off his fingers. And no more watching a man the size of a bodybuilder shy away from contact like a punter.

I honestly think that VDs injury vs the Bears in game 2 last year has played a huge part in kaps fall. Our offense was so based on VD providing the vertical threat. He gets hurt never fully recovers and the offense really struggles for the balance of 2014.

We take terrible losses to the OL and it's evident VD ain't right anymore and you find us in the situation we are now. Again, it's not the only factor but I think his loss of speed and effective is a big factor.

No point in having speed when Manning doesnt have an arm anymore. I dont like the pick up by DEN but I guess its cheap. I actually think GB was a better fit and they are desperate for a TE and one with speed? Wow did they miss on this.
@VeteranScout on Twitter posted some clips of Vernon this season. May want to check his TL and watch those.

This really needs to be an appreciation thread. The dude is the greatest TE in 49ers history. And it's not even close.

Thank you for everything, Vernon.

not sure about greatest but top two, yes. we should not judge him on the last year and a half,, you want to be mad,, think of all the wasted f**king years with sing and nolan when gore, willis, vernon were at the TOP of their game and we pissed it all away .3 great cornerstones .... THATS the time frame we really should be mad at in my opinion.

I would say he is the greatest TE in 49ers history. What he did in the playoffs for us was amazing. Not to mention he leads all receiving categories for a TE in niner history. I know the last two years he was a dud, but I think he will offer Denver something. Good luck to him.

Brent jones?

Brent Jones is my personal favorite TD...but VD has him beat in all the major categories in about the same amount of games and didn't have the QBs jones had throwing him the ball.

Agreed. Jones never dominated the way Davis did.

He had a lot more completion for balls...Jones was the prototype for guys like Witten and Gonzo...I think his contribution to the game is very under rated

You really can't compare them. VD got the benefit of being split wide without a defender being allowed to touch him 5 yards downfield. For a TE that is huge because they are typically a match up problem for either LB or corner.

But Jones put up roughly the same numbers as Davis being the 3rd or 4th option. Rice got a lot of looks but also demanded the double. Davis was our first receiving option pretty much his whole career. More looks but more double coverage as well.

I'd give the slight edge to Jones because, yes he had Montana and Young, but he was slow as hell. Davis had all the physical attributes and the benefit of great passing rules and only put up slow white guy numbers from the 80s.

A totally crap deal for the 9ers.

Again thanks to Krapnpick, he killed Vernon's career just like he killed Harbaugh's career with the 9ers from a 13 TD TE to now being traded.

Screw it, I am happy for Vernon for not having to play for such a sh*te team and a completely hopeless retard of a QB.

Best of luck, you will be missed, Vernon!! Go and lift that Lombardi!!

Let's go Bronocs!!

Yup! I've always been a Davis fan but I also understand the downfall he's taken because of the inept QB play we've had for years here. Kaep was supposed to be the guy that brought the air game back to the bay area and we all know how thats turned out. Until Kaep shapes up or is shipped out, pass catchers are doomed here. Poor Torrey.

Totally. It doesn't matter who you have on the team, be it a super TE like Vernon or even Megatron, as long as you have the sh*ttest starting QB in the league playing for you, you have no hope in hell.

Just look at poor Torrey now as you mentioned, the dude was so frustrated whereby he had to stomp his feet trying to get Krap to wake the fxxk up and open his eyes to see he was open to make a play and still Krap did nothing and just handed the ball off and ended up with a safety. You don't think Torrey is regretting like sh*t now signing with the 9ers?!

This team is the pits right now. They need to get rid of the coaching staff and the QB before they can begin the rebuild.
Well it's kinda good I suppose. I only started watching this year and he looked like he was just swanning about out there, no real heart in what he was doing. If he doesn't want to play, best move on.

Why is this thread still in the NT section?

One more night!

This is the end of an era.
Hats off to VD.10 years with us and some damn good years. I don't fault him for his lack of production the last 1 1/2 years. The timing was right as he was never going the-sign here anyways and the obvious re-build.
The long list of departed players continues to stack up, coincidentally during a season in which our very home stadium hosts the Golden Anniversary Super Bowl.
God forbid we have a way to keep Seattle or Green Bay or Dallas from winning a Super Bowl on our home turf. No --- lets just flush this season straight down the can. I can't believe I have seen our team leave the city, fire the coach, followed by a mass exodus of players that the front office doesn't seem to care about. If I were a free agent, I would leave too.
Can anyone explain how our front office equates Vernon Davis with a 6th round draft pick? What is the state of mind of Trent Baalke, and Jed York? Have these 2 gone awol off the asylum? Will a new stadium mean anything if we stop going to games?
This is absolutely insane.
On another note -
Vernon, you've been nothing but classy and I've felt so bad for you in our forgotten non offense. It hurts to see you go- but I wish you well my friend, and hope you get a ring.
Good luck to you.

The next 49er I want to hear about leaving is Trent Baalke. Followed by that ridiculous excuse for a head coach. Jed York- you aren't getting another dime of my money if you don't change this situation and get in a front office that gives a damn about football. Get Young and Rice in here to fix what you've destroyed.

Manning can still deliver the ball. I'll take his noodle arm over the cannon's like Kap and Stafford. Peyton's deep ball gave GB problems all night. This talk about his arm strength is being blown way out of proportion.

Uh-huh ...
Great 9er. I know hw was declining skill wise, but I still would have thought that we could have gotten more than a couple of sixth round picks.
