There is a reason why Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, and Ben Roethlisberger went in the top 10 in their respective draft class. If there isn't a QB of that quality at #7, don't pick him.

Both two year starters, around 40 career TDs (although Harrington with 43 on about 200 less attempts), and about 1800 yard difference in career passing (which could be chalked up to attempts).

Harrington was a 3 year starter and threw for 59 career touchdowns.

Sorry about not including the first year. But if we're comparing Freeman with Gabbert, we might as well throw in Harrington.

But if you go to my original point, minus Harrington there aren't two year starters taken in the top 10 who have identical stats and productive careers in recent draft memory. That is, there is absolutely no precedent for Gabbert to be taken this high in the draft.

And I stated where I believe his true value is however a QB inflated market due to the grey area league circumstances means teams will be forced to reach moreso this year than any other year prior for QB's.

By far his best highlight

I have not watched him much on film, but his mobility in that shot reminded me very much of Gio Carmazzi. Clunky.

I totally agree that QBs will be overestimated in value, but if you're of the school of thinkers who considers drafting Carr and Harrington as reaching for QBs who weren't worthy of their draft status, then one must pause.

Frank Gore was drafted in the 3rd round, but obviously in retrospect people would draft him in the first. There will always be players who are better than their draft status.

But the point I would like to make is this: if Blaine Gabbert is expected to sit on the bench for the next two-three years because his skill set isn't NFL-ready, we might as well draft a QB in the later rounds to do the exact same thing. Furthermore, drafting someone like Leinart just because you need a QB doesn't excuse you from having made a bad draft selection.

Let me offer one last outlook on this.

Put Rivers, Manning, and Roethlisberger in this draft. Where would Blaine be? Would he even get drafted in the 1st? The year the patriots drafted Chad Jackson, I don't think there were even any WRs taken in the top 30 picks, except for Santanio Holmes at #25. The best receivers out of the entire class didnt come in the first round, Jennings, Marshall, and Colston. Sometimes the draft doesnt yield clear-cut first round talent, and you just get lucky with things later on.

Reaching is not a good idea unless you absolutely are certain of the player, which is pretty much how we set ourselves back with Alex Smith.

Chat wrap: 49ers fan fretting Blaine Gabbert
April, 28, 2011 Apr 282:31PM ETEmail Print Comments2 By Mike SandoThe final NFC West chat before the 2011 NFL draft came and went amid a flurry of NFL developments. I'll break out some highlights here and offer additional thoughts afterward.

Keith (Dallas, TX): If the 49ers draft Blaine Gabbert (aka less-intelligent Alex Smith) at #7, should I burn all my SF gear at the end of the first round tonight or wait until the final pick of the draft Saturday?

Mike Sando: You should hope that Jim Harbaugh's feel for quarterbacks and ability to work with them allows Gabbert to become a successful quarterback. And you should feel grateful the team finally appears to have some philosophical stability on the offensive side of the ball. There's no reason to compare Gabbert to Alex Smith, because the 49ers are in a much different situation now.

Tell me Mike "KNOW IT ALL" Sando how different are these 49ers from Alex Smith niners i see pretty much the same team only difference is a new head coach

as i read more & more post from Mike im disliking his blogs more n more

I don't think any QB is worth a top 15 pick from this draft.

Soooo because he does not agree with your point of view he is wrong?? nice!

This guy covers the whole NFC west he doesnt focus on one team unlike our fellow beat writers i dont think he has really done his homework with Gabbert like other experts have

why do you think Gabbert is slipping all of a sudden team's that are taking a very close look at him are finally seeing he's all hype with no upside

to dangerous to take at #7

rather have the niners trade down pick up a player or 2 extra & go with a safe pick down the later rounds with somebody like Stanzi or Kaepernick
