WASHINGTON -- All 10 members of the NFL owners' labor committee and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees are attending negotiations as the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement nears.

Wednesday's talks between the sides at the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service comes on the same day that the league's 32 team owners are gathering to meet at a hotel about 25 miles away in Chantilly, Va.

The mediation resumed a day after a federal judge handed NFL players a key ruling Tuesday in their fight to strip the league of $4 billion in TV revenue they contend was unfairly and illegally secured as a way to survive a lockout.

The CBA runs out at midnight Eastern time as Thursday becomes Friday, and whatever happens this week could cause the country's most popular sport to lose regular-season games to a work stoppage for the first time since 1987. Or, perhaps, everything could be resolved by management and labor in an industry with revenues topping $9 billion annually.

This may actually be the best thing that could happen. If the owners can't use that money then they may be more inclined to work with the NFLPA.

Exactly. Before this happened I was not convinced that the owners were really trying to get this resolved quickly, since they knew they could easily wait out the union while still earning TV revenue. Now they will have to actually try and hammer out a deal.

I'm not on the side of the union or the owners. I'm on the side of the fan. And for fans, I think this is a big win.

Agreed. I don't think the owners and players realize(or just don't care) about the fact that they're gonna alienate the fans with a lockout. The fans don't care about a bunch of rich people arguing over money.

It's not that they don't care, it's that they don't think anything they do will alienate fans to the point that attendance or tv ratings will decrease. They see us as sheep who will return regardless of how long this is drawn out.

They're very stupid then. It took MLB over 10 years to recover from their last work stoppage.

The NFL is extremely arrogant. Just read the story about the judge ruling they can't pocket the tv money. I mean they have been calculating this for more than 5 years.

I hope the owners hold firm and make the players cave in to their demands.

they happen to be right though. None of the customers are going to do a damn thing, and yes they will be waiting.

The difference with what happened to the MLB, is game play and season was already starting to be looked at as somewhat antiquated.....so their work stoppage just allowed many fans to do what they had been pondering already. Plus the NFL was getting really good.

IF

The NFL had some new league sport to contend with then they would be miscalculating, but they don't.

The suckers....er I mean customers will just complain and complain, but whenever they choose opening day to be, they will be throwing their money right back into the pot

Wow, I'm surprised at the results so far on this poll. 27% owners, 23% players, 50% neither. From what I've read in PL threads, it seems most people are against union workers. I was certain the owners would be closer to 50% and neither would be at 27% instead. Seems to be a double-standard around here.

I am also surprized by the results of this poll.

The players are the game, so I tend to support them.
If i had to side, i side with the players here because the nfl is one of the few leagues in which virtually every team can turn a profit and these last few years there have been record numbers in sales and tv revenue. business is boomin in this league all because the players give life and limb for public consumption. the owners are filthy rich and are very greedy. i have a son and i will tell him to play anything but football even though i love it so much. the nfl has a hard salary cap for team payroll unlike mlb and nba so your pay is ultimately restricted but yet u risk life and limb. i bet nba and mlb wish there was a hard cap so that all squads can b competitive like the nfl is. a small market can win a chip e.g. NO, GB, and PIT. in mlb it is yankees and nba boston and LA buyin and payin for chips. half those franchises in those leagues can only dream of turning profits the way the nfl does where every team can compete. the nfl owners have it made but yet they want the players to give them one billion dollars back without opening their books. wow, this is unbelievable!! I got better long term pay and benefits in my current occupation than some of these players and i know of some instances personally not talking bout the top players but some of the lower tier players. this is ridiculous and some don't even have the proper education to do much better. i tell my son to play for mlb because there is no cap. teams can pay u what they want it seems

This is getting more interesting than most thought. Three sources: Extension of talks now a definite possibility.

Doesn't mean it will happen, but owners pushing for an extension of talks. Players willing if owners make some concessions.
Let the countdown begin....
