Johnson didnt fail the niners, niners failed Johnson.
We definitely need a third QB but it shouldn't be Johnson. I think in NFL once you're given an opportunity, you should give/do everything in your power to take advantage of it or else that opportunity will be gone and you'll never going to get another one. Johnson didn't take advantage and as a veteran of 13 years, he knew that. He's just not equipped to play/lead the team especially on a big stage like the NFC championship game. As for searching for the third string QB, Shanahan should delegate the task to QB coach Griese. In my opinion, Griese has eyes for good QB's. Take advantage with the talents of the people who work for you.

He hit some passes, and helped on the drive where CMC broke one right, tying the game?...and on others he was rushed out of the pocket a few times instead of hanging in there and anticipating a reciever to be break open.... he focus on one side of the field when he got flushed that way, and never turned all the way back to see Kittle by himself in the flat. These mistakes are fine early on until a QB gets themselves into a rhythm. How ever taking his eyes off the ball for a snap being too worried about the defense, and trying to pick it up instead of just falling on that was huge mistake that the worse time.

That all being said... he had one more half to shake off cobwebs...our team has shown how they can play as a whole in the second half of games.. I'm sure Kyle and Griesie had a good talk with him and had a better plan for the second half.....

but then he got taken out on our first drive in the second half. No opportunity to keep us in the game... no opportunity over come his first half (like Purdy was able to do weeks back).

To your point, the online sure didn't do him any favors either.

It just sucks all the way around and to be clear it was by no means Josh Johnson's place to save the season or a Super Bowl appearance, i just think he should have been able to play much better than we saw.

Oh I definitely agree don't get me wrong. Just like how the game was going and we got robbed of a great game... he had the opportunity of a life time, even this late in his career, and he came out flat and made a huge mistake. I'm sure he is taking it harder than us. In his mind leading up to these games I'm sure he had this wonderful vision of how if he had to come in, he would be so ready and make so many folks proud.

for his sake and for the team's sake, I wish he was able to play the whole second half.

Oh well.

I watched that during the game. He was trying to put his mouthpiece in his mask and could not stop shaking. Phi D line were probably talking about it. D lines can smell blood, watch LA Rams QB Everett when he just fell to the ground in a fetal position because he was getting hit so much. Pretty much ended his career. That was in the late 80's for those who don't know what I'm referring too.
Hmm

Just weird that a 15 year vet was like that

Chris
I have to say, when I saw Johnson fall apart out there in the biggest moment of his life, I was both angry at him and worried for him. I thought 49ers fans were going to rip him apart for what he did.

I have to admit, I think the reaction has been restrained. I think people have seen the human side to it as well as the sports side, and I'm grateful for that.
I think a lot of it is just, what did we expect from the team's 4th QB? Nothing against JJ, I'm sure he is a good dude, but if you're down to #4 on the depth chart at the game's most important position, your hopes of winning a championship game are effectively 0, no matter how magical the season has been. Not Josh's fault

I get this human aspect of the argument... but nobody forced him to be there. He willingly signed and KNEW he was one play away from being inserted into the game. Yet he was completely unprepared. Inexcusable. Why didn't he just retire? Why stay active? I have no sympathy for him.

INEXCUSABLE.... But who was mostly responsible? Johnson takes a portion of the blame but you teally have to look at kyle and the staff there. Too involved with orbit motion day dreams to worry about prepping. #3 and six man protection reps.

What did you expect to do for the 4th stringer? I don't think you can blame the team. How many NFL teams prep their 4th string qb? I think the answer is none in which case it is the system that failed not the team. How many teams historically have look to a 4th string qb to win in the playoffs? The answer, iirc, is none.
Is he cut yet??
