no he is not that good. that is the type of game he should have been calling in the last two games. i am not breaking out a lovefest for him for doing his job right one time in the last three games. we will go as far as he will allow us to go in my opinion. did not take much to know you should get rid of the college pistol , line up normal and give it to gore.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would break out a love fest. That being said, it's good to know they still have the acumen to run a solid gameplan if they just stick to the basics.
I hope we run this style of offense every game but put a little more play action into it.

Early in the 3rd he did well also, then he started to try and get cute again with the stretch plays etc, but all in all, this game was called well and exactly what the 49ers needed. The insertion of Patton and Baldwin.....basically anyone but Kyle Williams into the lineup was f**kING huge
This!
For sure, I'll always give credit where credit is due as well. To be fair, I haven't rewatched the game closely. That 1Q was putrid (typical slow, slow starts to games) but I could atleast see a concerted effort to get CK some easy passes on the move and Gore involved. He clearly has that run then pass or pass then run pattern down way too predictable. IIRC, it appeared CK had a few more outlet options this game in case that #1 target was covered. CK clearly has some issues right now with progression reading, trusting his OL in pass protection and the WR's outside of Boldin, Miller and VD. But Baldwin looks like he may be that X receiver we've been missing. I saw at least 2 or 3 slant passes to him and that is a huge trust-pass between a QB and a WR. We at least have some time to rest, game plan and have a win and some postives to build off of.
Honestly I think Roman did a pretty good job tonight. It was so good, in fact, that you could see the weak link in the passing game was the QB and his making slow reads (if at all). Kaep is spooked back there right now.

Anyways, we had some success in the passing game yesterday because the coaches cut the field in half for Kaepernick and didn't ask him to make any more than 1 or 2 reads at the most. Luckily, the Rams are no better than a college team and it worked fine. Not too sure he'll be able to do that against Houston as it will be a lot tougher to run the ball against Cushing, Watt, and company. If you have Gore on your fantasy team, I wouldn't touch him next week.

This is true...Baldwin could end up being a big piece here, both in the run blocking and receiving area (moving those chains).

I feel like roman's passing plays are something I would design while playing at the park. I feel like he just sends guys deep or puts them all in the same area. You don't see very many recievers, TE, or RB accross the middle, out in the flats,or on short to intermediate routes. And his screen plays? OMG, they are almost always an utter failure. We have to be the worst screen team in the league with one of the best/youngest/most agile OL in the league. how does that happen?

I thought it got out there last year that Morton the WR coach worked on the passing part of the game and Roman the running part. Not sure if true our not but since the get go the run game has always been really creative (except this season) and the passing game always lacked creativity. We were really creative with the run in 2011 but got away from it. The passing game never seemed creative like the run game. The routes were basic, never really took advantage of slants, bunch formations, etc. One of the few pass plays that I like is that play on 3rd and long where we throw it underneath about 10 yards (middle of the field) and set it up so there are a few wrs in front of the receiver and block as soon as he catches it. Play is a good way to convert or get close to the first down on 3rd and long. I'm sure we didn't create that play but I see it being used around the NFL. I also like the play where VD goes to block, we roll right, and VD comes across the entire field and ends up a throwback to the far left. Other than that not a lot of passing plays that make me say "I like that one". As for screen passes you have a great question there. I think we don't practice it enough or use it in games enough to be good at it. Also, our OL are pretty agile for big men but it's not like they are 295-300 pound zone blocking guys who run in space blocking every play.

I don't like Roman but I still think he is one of the better OCs in the game right now. Until we can find someone else he will continue to win us a good percentage of our games.

It's pretty obvious Roman isn't watching, or at least paying attention to opponents films, making up a gameplan. He should always have a gameplan B, which we see he doesn't. We all here know of plays we run that always gain yardage. I think Frank Gore knows the best plays for him to get yardage, over the ones that look like a train wreck. I don't know how close Roman is to his team, but he should know way more about our strengths, and put Kapernick only in position to succeed. Harbaugh needs to make sure his young QB doesn't get ruined!

This is a HUGE issue and one I've been noticing for the past 12 games or so esp. under CK. The route-tree is horrendous and about as QB-unfriendly as it gets. They keep talking about precision and better execution but how is that possible if 3 receivers go out, two go deep and to the same area (easily covered) and he only "real" target is the shorter route and he's covered as well. These receivers aren't being covered b/c they suck, they are being covered b/c they are simple straight-line routes or curls that don't make ANY DB have to work to cover them. Then CK is off to the races and forced to ad lib and we, by far, have got to be one of the worst ad lib teams I've ever seen. Many of the times the WR's are still downfield blocking out DB's (b/c they expecting the underneath WR to get it cleanly) and/or they don't turn around in time, are slow in finding the soft zone (b/c they don't know if CK is going to run or they should GET AWAY from the DB for a pass), etc.
Either way, this is still a huge huge issue in this anti-WCO route-tree. The need to install SOME WCO principals so that CK not only has options at every level (deeper, intermediate, check-downs) but so that the RECIEVERS themselves know where to go and how to get open and the scheme favors their skill sets to get open instead of being easily covered like they currently are IMHO.

I noticed this on Boldin's first touchdown the other night, he actually ran a shallower route and Baldwin ran the deeper one but both to the same corner. There was a busted coverage I think and the CB moved onto Baldwin to assist the safety then came back. If he'd stuck with Boldin I don't think we'd even have got the first down...The Vernon TD was good, 2nd read and just Vernon beating his man.
I actually was happies about the 2 Baldwin catches largely because I think it will encourage Kaep to throw more to him - McDonald needs to be a target as well for Kaep, he needs to be confident in putting it to Baldwin, Boldin and McDonald when they're covered and let them go get the ball.
I think we should be sending Vernon deep, Vance McDonald sitting in the middle and Boldin/Baldwin running rouates from the outside. Also Roman should have a look at some of the short checkdown passes that KC executed against Philly, they actually threw short to a crossing route in the middle while 3 other receivers blocked ahead of the target.
