WINer, how can any of us say, one way or the other, who is at fault, when the little used guys you mentioned, rarely got their numbers called. JH is a stickler about not letting young guys(1st yr rooks) allow them to lose a game for him. OK, I buy into that, but we had a handful of games we won by 30 pts. My observation at the time was it would have been an ideal time to throw to vance, LMJ(that was NEVER going to happen), Baldwin, patton. But between JH and ro-man, they just flat out decided against it. Hey, it is JH's team ,he is the coach, and that's it. But they did miss a golden opportunity to see what they really had on the bench.
So here we are Sofa, getting ready for draft and guess what? JH and ro-man still don't know what they have for the little used receivers on the bench and I include vance in that. That is a shame. A coach should know what he has/doesn't have on the bench before going into the draft. And frankly, I am not any too sure they actually know. THAT is the best reason I can think of to use your entire team in 30 pt wins. The wise coach knows who he has on the bench and what that guy can do. WE coulda done a lot better.
DJ, I have thot that in the past, but never seen it written. It is as true as the sky is blue. QBs make the dough, and WRs have to be content with the part of the pie eaten up by that big qB contract. Oddly, that is not the situation we have been in but it is rapidly approaching...
I'm with you. I'm disappointed we don't have a better idea of what we have in Vance and Patton. I wish they were more of a factor in the passing game, but it didn't happen. I felt Vance should have been given more opportunity, but at the same time drops plagued him throughout the year. Tough to put confidence in a player that doesn't catch the ball. Patton looks like a gamer. Hope he earns a bigger role in 2013.
Despite the clear history of not trusting the young guys I think Patton and Vance are going to get more involved this year. Vance was clearly shakey as a reciever and they didnt want to go through those growing pains in a tight race for the playoffs this year, Patton got hurt and didnt have any chance to build a raport with Kap and when he got back I think he was sort of an afterthought in the game plan and in Kaps reads because he was an unknown quantity.
Still I think the front office needs to make a reasonable offer that they can afford to Crabs and if he wants to chase money we have to let him walk. Regardless this year we need to be all on WR and CB this year. Plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Yes we need to put forth a competitive offer to Crabtree because he was OUR tenth overall draft pick and you build by drafting. If he's too steep we move on!

I have a feeling Crabs will take the money and split town , because I don't see us paying him elite WR money ...but I'm sure he will receive a fair offer from us, just not the mind blowing ridiculously big money deal him and his agent will seek out

Holding judgment until the middle/ end of the year. It's a contract year and after Sherman called him out I'm expecting big things from Crabs. To me it's either Iupati or Crabs and we should just sign whoever is more reasonable in their demands.

I'm getting more and more use to the idea that he wont be here much longer. To me it's simple hes not a elite WR so if that's the type of money he wants he wont get it here. Sorry Crabtree your not going to get elite receiver money when you miss training camp and pre season and parts of the season every year. What's funny is i doubt he gets elite WR money elsewhere either. He might get offered a bit more money some where else it's up to him if he wants to leave for a small pay raise. Instead of staying on the team that drafted you and where you have good chemistry with your QB.

To be considered "elite", don't you have to have elite stats? Has he ever been top 10 in any stat? I don't know. I'm just asking. I don't think he has. I like him on the team, but if he expects to get paid like an elite performer, I think he needs to, you know, actually BE an elite performer.

I would love for us to diversify. The problem you raise I think has to do with the coaching staff/coordinators vs. the players.
Pasodoc and I share minds on this.
Yup, we pretty much agree on the problem. I just put a little more responsibility on the players side.

Why would we pay big $ to a "mediocre receiver?"

I don't know if hes mediocre but the reality of things are hes a good receiver for this offense our QB loves throwing to him and they have good chemistry. Kaep makes Crabtree a better receiver and Crabtree makes Kaep a better QB but is he elite ? no should he get elite money ? hell no. The Niners will offer him a fair deal for what hes worth if he chooses to be greedy and want more then the choice is his.

My prediction is that he'll bolt for any better money immediately without a second thought.

What do you expect from M. Crabtree if he does put up a 1000+ season... what do you think he is worth?

Hes not an elite player. But he might get paid. Seems like nobody wants to pay anybody.

Crabtree is gonna go where the money is at just like Deion. Deion was in his ear when we drafted him and come free agency Deion will be right back there again. I want to keep Crabtree as much as everyone else but the money he is likely to command plus his history with injuries makes me think he won't be a Niner past this coming year. Definitely hope we grab either Jordan Matthews or Jarvis Landry to be our Boldin/Crabtree replacement and Odell Beckham Jr., Brandin Cooks or Bruce Ellington to be our speed receiver. Wouldn't mind taking a late round flier on a redzone receiver like Cody Hoffman either.

I should also include Davante Adams as a potential Crabtree replacement. Adams in my opinion is a clone of Crabtree. Only concern is the level of his competition he played against. I saw first hand some of the defensive backs he went up against and I wasn't impressed to say the least.
