I never said that he lied.

I accept it as a fact, if only because Barrows and Maiocco have been consistent with his account. Unless there's a grand conspiracy of 49ers beat writers looking to mislead people on what is a minor detail, there's no reason to doubt the veracity of their claims. You may accept it however you wish to.

OK. I understand that you believe what he said is a fact.
Heading into the draft, there was plenty of buzz that the 49ers would trade up like they did last year for LSU's Eric Reid and that another LSU player, Odell Beckham, Jr., was their target. General manager Trent Baalke acknowledged a fondness for Beckham, but he said that getting the speedy receiver would have been a bit too expensive. Beckham ended up being taken by the Giants at pick No. 12. "We certainly liked him as a football player," Baalke said. "But the price of doing business when you're trying to move up into the Top 10 or close to the Top 10 becomes pretty stiff. And you're giving up a lot of football players to go get one football player. And if you look at history, a lot of time it works against you."

Baalke said the draft's depth at wide receiver also prompted them to stay put at No. 30. Indeed, there are several players – including Indiana's Cody Latimer, Vanderbilt's Jordan Matthews, Penn State's Allen Robinson, Fresno State's Davante Adams, Ole Miss' Donte Moncrief and USC's Marqise Lee who are still available. The 49ers have two picks in the second round, Nos. 56 and 61, and three in the third. If the 49ers are interested in a field-stretching player like Beckham, they might like Clemson's Martavis Bryant, who is one of the players that visited Santa Clara last month.

Sounds like Beckham was just way out of their range.

Has that happened before? I hope they just make him a CB. It doesn't make sense to me otherwise

Baalke and company do things that do not seem to make sense on with some regularity.

Opted to draft Bruce Miller to play full back.

Opted to play Culliver at cornerback and not at safety.

Baalke said that initially Ward will focus on learning to play nickel back and safety.

Right i understand coverting players like culliver and miller, esp in later rounds.

DBs often convert to safites and sometimes visa versa. But i'm trying to think where a guy was drafted in round - 1 to change positions and also to learn his natural position.

Its just bizarre to me. Why not focus on one position, especially because we are desperate at cb.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but last year when he started at safety, he would still come down and cover the slot when the team went to the nickel d. Having the skills and smarts to do this as seamlessly as he did it shows great versatility. If and when he converts to safety, he will be asked to do a lot of the same stuff as he would do playing ncb. After he puts on a few more pounds I think he is the new prototype at safety. He can do it all. Play center field, play close to the line and cover slot receivers. This eliminates a lot of advantages motions and mismatches today's nfl offenses creates.

And I understand that you don't believe it is a fact. Neither of us is wrong or right, just opinionated.

Baalke, in an interview talked about the fact that Ward had played nickel back at Northern Illinois and at the Senior Bowl. Baalke was impressed with the ability that he showed when playing the position.

Thats what i was hoping. He was here to be db. But why is baalke saying he will learn to play nickle AND safety? That just seems odd and indesicive to me. Ive never heard of a first rounder drafted as a safety, to learn how to play nickle and safety. It sounds like baalke was spitting gum and hoping it sticks somewhere with this pick.

I did know that Barrows and Maiocco have corroborated Lynch's statement. Please provide links.

I have never said that Lynch lied, nor I have claimed there was a conspiracy of 49er beat writers to mislead people.

If you can not provide the requested links, I see no reason to continue this discussion over a minor detail.

Have a good day.

He's got a background in both positions, its not like they're asking him to play WR and then move to OLB, there's a lot of overlap between cornerback and safety, the skills he develops as a nickel corner will also aid him as a safety as well.

OK. It does not strike me as odd or bizarre, but it may be.

Gotcha. So he will get a chance at db and if that doesn't work out, then he will move to safety?
I was at first frustrated we passed on Lee for Ward, but now I think it was a good choice. Ward is very versatile and fills multiple needs for us while WR isn't as pressing as some think. We can easily get a good WR in round 2 plus a top DL prospect like Tuitt or Hageman

Haha cool. Im not a draft guy so ill take ur word for it. I was just looking for a definitive position he will play. Harbaugh said nickle so we'll go with that.

I was actually cringing that the 9ers WOULD draft Marquise Lee and even Bradley Roby.
