I'll be pissed if we extend him and bow out on the RBs in the draft.

This is just a chance to see what Hyde wants and let Hyde know what the 49ers expect. If those two meet, then he re-signs here.
It does not mean that the 49ers will not draft a RB. However, as noted above, with the Foster situation, it bumps the RB need down a level. CB, OL and LB are now greater needs than RB. We don't have as many picks this year as we did last year, hence, the ones we do have must go for high priority positions unless a BPA just blows Lynch away.
We won 5 straight games last year with Hyde as the starting RB.
Agree, and Kyle would be a piss poor OC if he didn't know how to scheme his offense and tailor it to Hyde's strengths and minimize his weaknesses I'll be fine if Hyde is extended, and I'll be fine if he's let go. He doesn't quite fit Kyle's system, but he's not bad in it either. He's productive and while not having outstanding production, it's good enough - as you said - to give us 5 straight wins last year.

Not a good look at all.
That's suppose to be our bread and butter for yards.

I would have to do some digging, but i would be willing to wager Hyde is likely one of the worse performing and producing Backs Shanny has ever produced in his offense. He is a horrible fit, and was downright mediocre last season, and really his entire career. One of the most overrated back sin 49er history.

He's a damn good back but not a great fit in shanny's offense. That's all.

MM update.
TALKS WITH HYDE'S AGENT
The 49ers are in contact with agents for all of their scheduled free agents, Lynch said. The club will hold discussions with Carlos Hyde's representatives during the NFL Scouting Combine.
"We'll talk to him this week," Lynch said of agent Doug Hendrickson. "Carlos is a really good football player for us. We'll see what happens there."
Among the team's other scheduled free agents are Eric Reid, Tank Carradine, Brock Coyle, Aaron Lynch, Brandon Fusco and Dontae Johnson.
"The reality, not all of them will be signed before free agency," Lynch said. "We have a plan, and we're working toward that."
Lynch pointed out that the running back class is deep, too.
"Running back has some good options," he said. "There's strength at running back – some really good players."

eh, it's all about maneuvering to put the team in the strongest position possible during negotiations. In the end, it means nothing until an announcement is made.

The concern is about his ability to stay healthy and I don't feel he'll be viewed as a long-term solution at the position.

He was healthy all season and heavily featured. He is simply overrated.

He's landed on IR 2 of the last 3 years.

2016 shouldn't really count. He played 13 games. Went on IR at the end of the season with an injury that would have healed in another couple of weeks.

Personally, if we can solidify the RB position in free agency then we can use the draft pick that would have gone to an RB pick, towards replacing Reuben or selecting another Edge rusher or DB. Joe Williams is already on the team and every indication is he'll be full go in the offseason. Brieda was a great pickup, and I can see them picking up another undrafted free agent after the draft, if they go defense heavy in the draft.
