GREG ROMAN - A COORDINATOR FOR HIRE

Outside of the goal line stand in the 3rd quarter that squandered a chance to ice it I don't think Roman called that bad of a game. We were averaging some 6 yards a play during the 1st half or something like that. Just a lot of penalties disrupting the rhythm of the game and atrocious decision making from Kaepernick. This is a game we should of won easily and Roman is one of the last people I'd blame for the outcome.

I might quibble on Roman (and by proxy Harbaugh) being the last people to blame, but just set that aside. It is ABSOLUTELY on HaRo they started a drive with 6:55 left in the game, down by 8 points, and then act like getting 6 PLUS a 2-pt conversion is a foregone conclusion. Did they need to go no-huddle the whole drive? No, but would have killed them to maybe run 2-3 consecutive plays with some sense of urgency? Pretty slow into/out of the huddle, all the while tick tick tick. Then they put themselves in a position where they had to use 2 (or all 3?) TO's on offense, including one just prior to 2-minute warning where they wasted almost 40 seconds then called the TO...so now they pinned all hope on this one drive, whereas a faster tempo and some basic clock mgt gives them a chance to use those TOs on defense, and that's regardless if they had scored a TD and made/failed on 2-pt, or no score at all.

You see how Dallas has crowded the LOS with their LB's - a lot like what Chicago was doing throughout the game last night.

I've highlighted the slot receiver - this isn't the route he runs on this play, but, if he did run a drag route, those LB's have him covered. They aren't having to "catch up" to anything. VD actually does run a drag route from the TE spot and it's covered. Dallas is trying to take away the middle of the field(which they have) You see that the only options are to the outside receivers. Which CK goes to on the hook to Boldin - just like he did last night to Crabs. The only difference is, on this one he threw it high and inside(Boldin made a great catch) but last night he threw it to the outside against a corner with outside leverage.

You see how the LB's pinch the drag route.

From here you see where the drag routes would be run and the red is where the LB's drop - they're not going to get beat by a drag if they drop into coverage. You see how they're able to drop back shallow while reading the QB. If CK throws that drag route - Davis is going to get pummeled.

It was the right playcall and the right throw on the 2nd INT, it's just a bad throw.
thx a lot

No player or coach should be defended or justified after that high school performance during a nationally televised game in our HOME OPENER. Not one! Enough with the justifications.

The "justifications" come because a coaching staff is being called to be fired after years of sustained success. Are they not allowed to have a bad game? Are they not allowed to make mistakes? Are they to blame for everything? Is the solution so easy as to say, "fire Greg Roman" and we dominate the league? We act like championships are entitled, not earned. That the other team isn't fighting for the same thing we are and sometimes they get the better of you. We act like this team is doomed for failure when precedent clearly shows otherwise. We act like the problems in a game are one cause only.

I understand visceral reactions, but sometimes these are way overboard; too extreme and color opinions so much that we blame the nearest and easiest thing.

That's fair but the other side is admitting it was just a poor game plan lacking in situational awareness and really, setting us up for failure while sticking to the game plan...putting WAY too much on CK in a game we were up 17-0 even after it was obvious what wasn't working. And it snowballed from there and it ended in the very common pattern we've now seen over 4 years.

Trust me, I was just as pissed at Fangio's piss-poor game plan esp. at the end of the first half. I'm not here to advocate for firing anyone but I am willing to very much entertain that b/c I can comfortably say, that's probably what Jed and Baalke are talking about as we speak. Why? B/c that's their job! We just nationally embarrassed ourselves at a home opener in a clear pattern we've seen now over long periods of time...if they want to single out Harbaugh, Fangio or Roman, good! That's THEIR job.

Ballke and Jed have done their part...they've brought in the most talented roster in the NFL and brought in a brand new stadium with the best facilities and resources in the game to succeed at the highest level, yet, the pattern is exactly the same.

So today may be a day to back off the justifications and screen shots and gifs and look at the whole picture for a change...the body of work, and ask ourselves one simple question: Is this offensive philosophy going to get us over the hump and even help carry the defense a bit while we wait for the key reserves while we take on the Cards in AZ, Eagles, @ Saints, etc.? I think if anyone honestly answers that question with a resounding, "Yes!" at this juncture, s/he may be a bit out there IMHO.

Demote Roman and put Fangio on notice. Absolutely no excuse for not going after a head case like Cutler!!!! We ran a soft zone from. midway through the 2nd quarter all the way to the end??? That's just retarded! Get after Cutler like everybody else who had success against him does. smh

Totally agree NC...the sample size is definitely big enough to really look at the big picture and fairly judge this current regime. I can see where Jonnydel is coming from but he hasn't been around here long enough to know that you guys have been pointing out these deficiencies for a while now and not much has changed.

Roman has had a pattern of out thinking himself. CHI is one of the worst teams against the run and our game plan was pass heavy.

I won't get a chance to rewatch the game on NFL Rewind until later but it looked like most of the game CHI was stacking the box and focusing on stopping the run. Our run pass ratio was 34/27.

and they still didn't stop it though. we just stopped running with power. and we didn't pass with intent to spread their defense thin. the offense essentially didn't do anything to assert itself.

Exactly. There is a way to use the pass to set up the run. The team came out passing which I did not mind. They could've tried some more deep shots using Ellington, Lloyd (if he was active), Davis (before he got hurt), and mixed in the power run game. Lining Bruce Miller up was ridiculous. Running him on 3rd and 1 was even more ridiculous. I've said it before in the actual Greg Roman thread, I need Roman to look great so some college will hire him. Even though this is Jim Harbaugh's offense, perhaps a new play caller that can mix things up will fully take advantage of who we have at WR, RB, and TE.
34 Passes, 27 Runs...and it's the same offense in year three...Kaepernick used that wrist flick passing Harbaugh oohed and aahhed about last week...to throw interceptions. Instead of setting his feet he just adlibed and tossed it on the run. Undisciplined and way too careless last night...but it's one game. I expect him to come out next week and have a stellar game.

As for Roman's offense--it's Jim Harbaugh's offense run by Roman and Harbaugh. So if Roman has to go...

But this is the zone, where over reaction is the norm! LOL!
people really think that our coaches lost us this game? or the play calling? i guess all those flags against us had nothing to do with it. i'm glad i'm the only one who thinks that wasn't a great game by the refs last night.
Lmao Verb makes a rant thread to fire Roman but can't acknowledge his boy Kap threw the game away with bad decisions.

This is why I need to back away - You talk about me like I've just been new to the zone. I've been watching the zone and the forums for over 6 years I just waited for several years before creating my profile, I just don't post all that often when I don't have evidence of what I'm talking about.

I understand if you all are upset, but there's not need to call me ignorant or someone who just makes "justifications" or who hasn't seen the "big picture".
3 and goal on the 7, run up the gut for 2 yds.

Common it's not like it was last year at this time when we were 1-1.
