Is the Green Bay vs. Seattle game one of the biggest meltdowns in NFL history?

Come on, Lisa. The Seahawks had a huge dose of Marshawn and an even bigger dose of luck. That two-point conversion?? COME ON! Wilson has got to be the luckiest QB in the league. The guy goes 1-7 with three ints and a rating of ZERO in the first half and he ends up the winning QB. Unbelievable.

On a very basic level, the team that wins the game is the better team. But all this does is reinforce one of my most basic observations about the NFL - that every year, luck plays an extremely important part in the outcome. The Seahawks got real lucky.

I didn't mention anything about luck but, yes, I'll grant you that some breaks occurred.
I was merely pointing out that, despite the Hawks poor play for most of the game, besides actually winning it (luck or not) they ended up on the better side of the stat ledger in most categories. That can't be disputed. How much credence the stats have in determining "the better team", I suppose, can be.

As for Russell . . .
he ended up the winning QB because of how he and his team performed in the last NINE minutes, over-comming their horrendous play in the first FIFTY-FIVE.

GB absolutely deserved to lose. Seattle did their best to hand this game to them on a silver platter, and they refused to take it. They played scared the entire game, even when they were up 16. They didn't take advantage of ANY of the golden opportunities they had to ice it.

- Twice passed up on 4th & Goal at the 1-yard line. Should have went for the TD both times.
- Rodgers-Nelson fail to convert an easy TD. Rodgers threw 2 INTs in scoring position.
- The defense allowed a critical 3rd & 19 conversion. Seattle goes on to score a TD on a Fake FG.
- Burnett picks off Wilson (his 4th INT), and inexplicably slides down with 5:00 left in the game when he could have ran for a possible pick 6. 3 & out ensues, the punter shanks the kick.
- GB fails to secure the onside kick, yet another blunder.
- Seattle easily scored on their last 3 offensive drives.

Seattle on the other hand took advantage of every gift GB gave them. Their defense did a hell of a job keeping the game close, and the offense made the plays they needed to win in the end.

Bingo!
Just because one team makes mistakes doesn't mean the other team is always able to capitalize.
Its what happens when a team gets a lead on the road in a hostile environment and is afraid to put their foot on the other teams throat. Green Bay got up by 16 points. It should have been a lot more. Their play calling then went very conservative and they ended up learning a big lesson when playing the Seahacks. The secret to winning in Seattle is taking away the crowd and they had done that but then they let them back in the game and poof, it all collapsed like a house of cards. Seattle is a great defensive team that keeps them in games but that offense doesn't even have the talent of our own 49ers. Wilson can be limited by applying smart pressure and he really doesn't have a lot of talent to throw to. Lynch is their heart and soul and I will laugh if they let him and his strange behavior walk out the door. The guy is a full-fledged nut, and even if it seems he's juiced, he can run the ball. He is their whole offense. But in the end its the defense and that crowd. Green Bay fans are obviously deflated but the blame for this loss doesn't fall on a third string TE who should have caught the ball even if he wasn't supposed to catch it. No, it falls on the GB coaching staff for foolishly thinking that their defense had the Seahacks number and that their 16 point lead was good enough for another 30 minutes of football. This fall in Mike McCarthy's lap. Its not Dom Capers fault because while his defense played better than I thought this year, his unit has holes. No, it was an offense that was afraid to take a shot at a banged up secondary. Offense and defense support or pull down each other depending on what the other is doing and the Pack defense got wore down badly in that second half because the offense didn't sustain a drive and settled for field goals. Is any of this sounding familiar? I don't like Pete Carroll, nor do I claim to be a football coaching mastermind but he did to the Packers exactly what I said at halftime he would do. The Seahawks didn't panic, the kept running the ball, controlled the clock, threw in some screen/swing passes to take away some of the pass rush and used the read option to get a TD. Basically they didn't panic and did what they could do with what they had. Green Bay didn't. All that's left for the Packers and their fans is regret. But for them and us 49ers fans is the realization that if our teams play two quality halfs of football and both units play well we can beat Seattle in their house by getting up and taking that very loud crowd out of the game. People used to see the Pack as unbeatable at home in the playoffs until someone did. The last two years the Hacks were beat at home in the NFCCG and like Denny Green once said, "We let em off the hook!"

So......youre not a hawks fan even though your name implies it since it has the word "hawk" in it?

But you are correct. I had a bad feeling as soon as the score was 6-0. To be absolutely dominating the stat sheet and every phase of the game but to only go up 6-0, I knew it was gonna end up costing them. Throw in some incredible good luck for seattle and there ya have it. Pretty typical

Dude, Pete is revolutionary.

Nobody preached "fight a full 60 minutes" until Pete Carroll along. Teams used to routinely forfeit games at halftime.

Nobody preached "create turnovers" until Pete Carroll came along. In fact, before he was in the NFL, there wasn't even a term to describe a "turnover", because they literally never occurred.

Nobody preached "competition and 'Next Man up!'" until Pete Carroll came along. On the contrary, coaches used to discourage competition, as they felt that getting the most out of players would lead to undue hardship on the player.

These reasons and more are why the Seahawks will win the Pete Carroll Bowl and end up hoisting their second Pete Carroll Trophy in as many years.

Lol this made me laugh...reminds me of my high school football team. Our motto became "Finish" after the 1st game of my senior season bcuz we went into a D-1 school (we were only D-3) and we beat them with a pick 6 in the final minutes of the game.We even had custom shirts made that said finish on the chest that we wore under our pads every game. We were so revolutionary I bet Pete himself stole the idea from my high school coach!!!
Everything went wrong. The on-side kick, not returning the pick, the ref' illegally allowing Seattle to decline a 15-yard penalty even though it happened after the play, the 2-point conversion...

Remember back in like 2002 or something when the Bears came back against the Niners w/ little time & got two 2-point conversions in a row? That's what the NFCCG felt like.

Same horrid play calling also.

No f'in way. That's too much of a coincidence. My middle school basketball coach AND your high school football team independently came up with the same brilliant concept? Unbelievable...

hell yes. GB had a chance to shut them down NUMEROUS times and failed. The fake FG, the onside kick, the 2pt conversion, 3rd and 16. so terrible.
Someone on the Packers needs to get fired over this abomination. Even if its a ball boy

Right?! Its hard to believe any coach of any sport would tell his players that its important to play hard and try to finish out the game strong
Even though by points it wasn't bad - compared to the Oilers meltdown to the Bills, or Chiefs loss to the Colts last year in the play-offs - but in terms of a complete mental collapse YES. At least in the other games, teams fought back over an entire half to win. GB melted down in the final 4 minutes really.
It definitely is ONE of the biggest meltdowns in history. The OP didn't say is it THE biggest in history...I guess it all depends on personal opinion as far as which is THE biggest meltdown, but I think there is no question that Packers game was ONE of the biggest meltdowns ever....to lose a 12 point lead in 4 minutes in such an important game where they had dominated throughout is awful. The Packers really should have been up by so many points that they could afford to be conservative...that's what happens when you settle for FGs all the time....right Niners?

.............. to me, luck is a cocktail of probability and the capacity to capitalize on opportunity. ....... but to some, it's a blessing that others get more of than they do and it makes them sad

and when it happens often enough, they wander to the fanciful for explanation.

let us review ..... the "luckiest" people on earth, the irish, have been riding a streak of luck dating back to visitation by the vikings, the firm hand of the tudors, the potato famine and ginger hair. but, hey! .... let's paint 'em green and call 'em "magical". the terms "poor" and "irish" are somewhat synonymous. are there any documented incidents of anyone spending any of that gold at the end of the rainbow?

the only luck you're likely to experience in life is waking to find there's still a bowlful of lucky charms left in your cereal box
