Defense really let us down today. If we get this win we have some momentum going into another winable game with Kap having a bit more confidence

LOL! Geep needed a week off!
It takes time for a team to assimilate a new system, this season was shot from the start. The people who are the most upset, are the ones who had the most unrealistic expectations, me I figured we would struggle, and I have no stress watching the games. My only real hope every week is not to be embarrassed, and this week, was fine, we took steps forward, and Im not embarrassed at all.
Seeing as how this thread is about the defense, I am surprised you aren't embarrassed for this 49ers defense. 500+ yards. 30 points. Gave up game winning drive. Mangini, from what I knew of him when he was first named DC, was a 3-4 DC that came from Belichick's coaching tree. He has not carried over the pattern matching schemes that he should know. That's what I am most upset about.
Not sure how difficult it is to teach and install with some very young DBs. Not my area of expertise. Can it be a matter of the DBs being comfortable with some aspects of the defense but not up to speed in others?
No pass rush. Without Lynch coming in from the side Manning could have sat in an easy chair all game long. No push up the middle. Williams did a good job at times stopping the run but just not enough plays up front. The second half was a bit better.

Mangini doesn't have the pieces yet. His secondary is young and stupid, he only has one pass rusher, and his schemes are known to be complex. It's gonna take time for the players to be comfortable in his scheme. But Baalke does need to get another pass rusher to pair with Lynch. (I don't know why Tomsula started Lemonier over Harold. I want to see what Harold can do)
All these pass defenders (LBs/DBs) were playing a different scheme last season and it worked for the most part. They are missing another pass rusher, I agree. So crank up the complexity of the coverages. This cushy zone crap ain't working. Complex coverages that adapted to the WR routes were used the past 3 seasons and they've gotten away from it. It's like he's trying to put his own stamp on things. The defense didn't need a scheme overhaul.

Eli was on when he had to be. Even completed passes after being grabbed at times. Frustrating. The only defensive failings that bothered me were on the last drive, which I thought was almost an homage to Fangio in giving up short stuff. Too concerned with the deep pass to the point of giving vereen too much room.
So much I missed tonight though that I'll probably watch it again. Why was Vareen so open? Did Hodges play?

It's really puzzling, I didn't see this one coming. I assumed Mangini would continue to play a similar scheme, but increase the frequency of blitzing. I didn't expect a complete overhaul of coverage scheme, nobody did. Mangini has trashed this defense.

Not enough talent, I think we made too many young mistakes on D. We're done for the year, but I saw a lot of positives from this game.

Bolded is what I thought as well. I have a feeling the film of tonight's defense is going to look a lot like ARI's where Fitz was killing it over the middle. Zone defense versus Ben and Palmer, two grizzled vets, and they light us up. Man coverage against Rodgers and he's contained. Let's go back to zone against Eli who is a veteran of however many years. Genius.

due to our offensive line and its inconsistencies, there's no way our offense can hold the ball long enough for the team to rest. this season reminds me back in the nolan days when the defense would look great and then fall off near the end of the game. well that and the bend but dont break aspects

Except for the fact the defense has been just as horrendous as the offense this year minus the green Bay mirage.
