There was so very good coverage tonight but they didn't maintain it for the whole game and went into a prevent in the last drive...but if they had played tight and been beaten deep we'd be screaming they should have played off...9er lost so they were wrong!

A minute left with no receivers on the field...Mangini may have thought the DBs could keep the ball short and bleed the clock...if so he was wrong.

He's coaching his ass out of the league at this point. Go back to television.

I did like him in ESPN.

On that last drive, there was no OBJ or Randle, their top two WRs. Challenge those backup WRs to win it. Giving short dumpoffs to Vareen was so frustrating to watch.

Typical prevent (from winning) defense.

Can't believe they allowed Vereen to get 51 yards receiving on that final drive with no resistance at all. So frustrating.

Exactly..Who in their right mind thought that going back to the same gameplan that we used against Pitt/Ari was a good idea?

Bolded is what I thought as well. I have a feeling the film of tonight's defense is going to look a lot like ARI's where Fitz was killing it over the middle. Zone defense versus Ben and Palmer, two grizzled vets, and they light us up. Man coverage against Rodgers and he's contained. Let's go back to zone against Eli who is a veteran of however many years. Genius.

Unbelievable. I'm at a loss, just don't understand what the coaches are thinking

The coaches are in over their heads. It's that simple.

Tomsula has no say. Remember baalke interrupting him during his first press conf saying "we're going to run the football"?

I must have missed that because it seemed like not only was there no pressure (No sacks on Eli tonight) but their receivers were wide open every time. It was literally watching the Pitt/Arizona games all over again. The fact that this coaching staff went back to it is astonishing.

I get the feeling Tomsula wants to be able to trust Mangini, and not force him to call the defense a certain way. But when things aren't working, that's exactly what he has to do. Mangini's defense has been a trainwreck. Whatever we've done in the PIT, ARI, NYG game needs to be thrown in a dumpster fire. Inexcusable the way the defense lost the game today.

I do, and I know why Baalke said that. It's because Tomsula didn't answer the question correctly. Tomsula gave a long winded, high level view about how they'd adapt the scheme to their personnel. Matt Barrows was looking for a much more straight forward answer. Baalke should not have interrupted to say that because it can be interpreted that Tomsula isn't calling any shots, but I am sure it isn't Baalke signing off on defensive gameplans. But if by chance he is, which I doubt, we are in deeper crap than I thought. Anyway, I think Tomsula needs to check Mangini. Stop doing what only worked once versus an inexperienced Bridgewater. Or, what if it's Tomsula's gameplans and Mangini is the one saying, "wtf are we doing?". Who knows.
We need a micro-manager to come in and check this fool....

I agree with you. The DC is most responsible, it's his job to call the game. I hold Tomsula responsible if after seeing Mangini's defense for several weeks, the proper changes are not made.

This zone coverage scheme got us torched against PIT, AZ, and now NYG. It has no business being in the gameplan at this point. We tried something different against GB, going back a little to what we did last year, and it worked. I have no idea why they reverted back to the same crap that got them killed in weeks past. In every road game so far this year, the defense has been completely annihilated.
