Looking at the 49ers defensive talent, there's no way this team should be so bad on D. But they are. That is clearly a coaching problem.

Our lack of pass rushers is a talent problem but Armstead/Carradine arent on the field ebough or used correctly many times. But our secondary is definitely better than it plays. Our LBers arent cover specialists but theyre always deopping back which is another Mangina special.

Teams rarely have top talent at every position. Most teams have that one weak LB. This team has plenty of talent all around and we are probably one of the deepest at the DL positions. There is a learning curve going on here and it also seems like the scheme for the DL has changed. Look at Aldon Smith, he is also in a different scheme now and not as effective. The scheme is huge on getting DL free'd up to get to the QB.

It seemed Mangini stuck to zone defense throughout the game. Why didn't he adjust and play more press/man? Giants receivers were running wide open all night.

I really think the pass rush thing is overblown. We got a lot of pressure on Eli (16 pressures off the edges) but he got the ball out quickly and there was always someone wide open.
Against Cards and Steelers pass rush was a definite issue but I don't think in this game so much.

This defense is not designed to get sacks from the three down linemen, or even the rush linebacker. We set a hard edge, rush 4, and blitz, a safety, and corner or maybe one or both MLB's.
We have the wrong personnel for this scene, at almost every spot. Those who are disappointed, are those who had unreality high expectations, or those who did not know the difference between Fangios conservative 3-4 and Mangini's high risk/ high reward 3-4.
this team, may have the same run first, play good defense philosophy, but it is coming from an ideology 180 degrees from Harbuagh.
So, get used to it, it will be a rugged transition, and even when complete, it will be a defense that makes big plays and gives up big plays. Let's just hope it makes more than it gives up.

Apparently Fangio has the Bears D ranked 4th in ypg allowed.

I have to watch this game again. Last night, I thought Mangini didn't adjust as the game went along, but on that last drive, 49ers were playing man coverage. It just so happened that Eli was able to isolate the matchup he wanted on that last drive - Tartt versus Vareen. It does make some sense to play zone versus NYG because no one is going to cover OBJ 1v1. Randle is also a good WR. Perhaps the gameplan should have been to bracket OBJ then force some one else to beat them. If it's Vareen, fine. But having OBJ run through zone was not working.
Point is I was really pissed with Mangini last night, but after watching that last drive again, he did switch to man coverage for the majority, if not all of that drive. Still wondering what happened to the pattern matching, but Mangini was not in zone the entire night.

Eric Mangini's 49ers defense currently is ranked 31st. Vic Fangio's Bears defense is ranked 4th.

I don't know how Baalke and Tomsula could just sit back and watch what happened for most of that game.....ESPECIALLY after how we played the Packers.
I wish Mangini would trust the front to get pressure on their own...as well as the coverage causing a sack. If Eli or other QBs make great passes, fine...accept it. Just don't make it easy as hell for them to move up and down the field.
How can the defense and the whole team play at a high level, with confidence, if they constantly see our defense looking at each other with their hands up before the snap...then giving up easy catches to the opposing team's best players..and again the players with their hands up.
we are already a team decimated with missing players from the past. Why make it THAT much harder for them? especially when our offense was struggling as well.
When something doesn't make sense... I always come to the conclusion of EGO getting in the way.

Watching the game and NY drove on us all the way down the field within a minute at the end of the first half also. If it weren't for a dumb Eli throw that Brock intercepted, we would be down 20-6 going into the half.
My thoughts: Man effing Gina didn't learn from that first half drive?

Does anyone else see our DLine talent as more of 1-gap shooters? Purcell appears to be very good at this and Armstead seems like he can play in either scheme.
With our weakness being the LB position, why are we still running the 3-4. The main reason we switched to this was because we used to have some good, fast LB's with Julian Peterson, Lawson,...and then onto Willis, Bowman, Brooks, Aldon.
We only have two solid backers now and Lynch is more of a DE than he is a backer. Would be nice to have Lynch at DE and our LB's be: Brooks, Bow, Wilhoite.
That ROLB spot with Wilhiote would be our weakest spot but his responsibility is also decreased with mainly being responsible for the flat only. Also, imagine Brooks blitzing from the same side as Lynch.

My only optimism comes from Lynch getting pressure. Hopefully Brooks will come back and we can start getting sacks.
Im anxious for the film thread cuz I wanna see who our d line is on 3rd and
Passing. If TJE Dorsey or Williams is in Mangini should be punched in the face. Put Tank and Armstead in and let Lynch and Brooks/Harold edge rush. Its not that complicated.
