since cards blow out game, do you think the defence seems to be tackling better?
and has it been stronger against the opposition running game?

So is it true that Mangini has been up in the box since the Cards game? If so, maybe this is why we've been playing better. He can def see the field better now.

They seem to be playing different to be sure, better tackles at line of scrimmage against the opposition RB. of course this is besides the seaspukes game we sucked so bad in that one.

This spreads us thin and puts pressure on the backers and safeties to make takes in the run game.
I think stopping the run was more of a personal issue as we hadn't given up a 100 yard rushers in 36 games dating back to 2009 when Greg Manusky was the coordinator.
It's called smoke and mirrors when you stop the run by scheme. Much rather have the personnel to do so. The fact we could stop the run with our base defense allowed Fangio a lot of room to work.

That's been my understanding as well. Funny, many of us were talking about this at the beginning of the season. Maybe it's working.

The problem with this team is consistency and its because they're young.
We come out and kill Minnesota on both sides of the ball
then against the steelers defensively they're running flag football while the offense is still doing good
then the next game the offense is horrible due to kap, the line, the line, and then the defense offered little fight (this is one of those prime time ilb deep coverage games where fitz just ran go routes right past them for every 1st down they needed)
then you go into green bay game defense plays well, offense doesn't play well at all
then you go to the giants game and the offense puts up 27 points on the road in a tough place to play and the defense gives up 30.
consistency has been lacking it hasn't been one player, as much as everyone would love to say it is.
1 player on either side hasn't been the difference. the collective whole of the team is being more consistent and used to doing what they need to do defensively
offensively basically once they realized they needed to continue roll out passes and quick passes and play action pass instead of the stuff they tried to have kap do with no kind of line help and benched dervy and inserted tiller the team has looked better.
its on everybody but consistency is this teams problem

You absolutely nailed it here. Even the Bears game is a microcasm of growing/developing of youth. 1st Q = 5 yards; 2nd Q = 125; 3rd Q = 5 yards; 4th Q = 125; OT 80 (game over). And on defense, we were just the same trend but alternating quarters.
As frustrating as hell it is to watch as fans, it's probably even more so for the coordinators/coaches. Then you sprinkle in all the injuries and it's messing with your game plans.
As a fan, you have to be very patient in year-1 of a rebuild and see the bigger picture. That's why those wanting us to lose this late in the season for a better draft pick (while, I get it) are off...the chemistry/growth/development and learning HOW to win while working towards consistency is what this season is all about.

this is a year where too many teams are bad to worry about a great pick. We need to get better and trend upward. I love our secondary. leave that exactly how it is that's a secondary we can have for the next 7 years contract permitting. they're very good
linebackers we need another olb badly. i think hodges will step in and be the ilb we needed. he and bow played together in college. it's going to be seamless for them now that wilhoite is out of the way.
on the line just need development. time and development, the talent is there.

Think you got it pegged. Johnson and Cromartie are legit, McCray is a ST ace but he is no Dahl at S, Reaser needs time, Hodges needs time to develop as does AA and Dial and Harold. It won't permit Baalke from going BPA either though (see Tartt last year). Could use a push starter at DE but keep your eye on Purcell. I just got done rewatching the game and he's everywhere too. Mangini has those DL lining up everywhere so it's going to take longer for them to settle in. I'd also love a wide-bodied two-gap immoveable NT too for short yardage, goalline and big bacts like Lynch.
But for a year 1 rebuild, this foundation looks pretty darn good and trending upward after a tough start.
