Happened to Fangio and Donatell a few times as well, plus Fewell is not going to be calling the plays, just coaching up the DB's, something he did a tremendous job of when he was secondary coach with the Jaguars.

Mangini's title was TE coach, though his job included coming up with how he would defend the Niners offense if he was DC of opposing team

He's a smart cat, Im surprised the webzoners seem so upset with the move

Expect a 3-4, but with more risks (Blitzes) and scheme related game plans tailored to who were playing

Yup. I am looking forward to it. Lets see what he can do. Pump these guys up man. He must be salivating at the talent we have on defense.

Fewell was the defensive coordinator when the Giants won the super bowl. Without looking it up, can you name one DB on that super bowl team? That was the team decimated by injuries at corner. They drafted Amukamara and he was hurt all season. I would say that he did a pretty good job maximizing his DBs. That was also the year the giants went on the road and stopped Rodgers at Green Bay when he was the MVP of the league, beat us the in Kyle Williams game, and then beat the Patriots. If you are gonna complain about him as our DB coach then, you would have found something to complain about anyone they would have hired.

If the front office defenders can make stuff up about Harbaugh did or said, then we should be free to speculate that the mole(s) in the locker room could be the coaches who are getting rewarded with jobs now.

Dude, 4 years of locker room dirt... which you can get from anyone in an organization that has 70+ employees in the same room is still far less of a reason for Harbaugh's departure than the two and a half years of bottom dwelling offensive coaching from a HC and staff that came from the offensive side of the ball.

Mangini may actually have learned not to flip off your boss and when one side of the ball is struggling, find someone to fix it before the front office... because when the front office feels they need to fix it, you're looking for a new job.
Well, we all know that Mangigi came from the 3-4 school of Bill (Parcells & Belichik)... which is a different version of Fangio's.. Fangio, going all the way back with Jim Mora Sr at New Orleans is more of the "Read n React" front 7.. always relying on the LBs to put the pressure on the QBs vs the Bill's "Giant 34" where it's more of an attacking front 3..

I like this 9moon. He needs to post more often.

Good post.

Terrell Thomas had a torn ACL. Amukamara was looked at as a bust because he was injured pretty much all year long.
Mangini and Tarver are widely considered "geniuses" among coaches and players. Tarver was the Adam Gase for defense a few years ago in the up and coming young coaching stud category. If we add Perry, between Mangini/Tarver and Perry, I have complete confidence that we will still be a top defense in the league. Possibly better because we will sure be more aggressive blitz wise than Fangio. In other words, I'm not worried at all about our defense as some of you seems to be with the hire of Mangini

Does this mean we go bigger at the NT position?

Possibly, could make Danny Shelton a real possibility for the 49ers.

This is slightly outdated (March 2014), but it lists the average weight (pounds) of all the 3-4 fronts in the league. The orange highlights show that the 49ers averaged the lightest at that position.

edit: can't count. The 49ers are not the lightest at DE. But to your point, they are the lightest at NT.

That's one of the reason our run defense suffered this year

We have never secured a proper NT in the whole time we have run this defense. Cowboy and Ray Mac helped hide this fact and elite LB play made it virtually not matter....but it was exposed this year with injuries being what they were.

I think the 49ers have had success stopping the run with Dorsey in 2013 and Ian Williams in 2014, both considered undersized NTs right at 300. Ian Williams was having an excellent season before he went down in the @NO game. Once Ian went down, Mark Ingram started to torch the front 7 for big runs. From that point, it was a revolving door at NT (TJE, Dial, Purcell).
