Ian Williams was having an excellent season before he went down in the @NO game. Once Ian went down, Mark Ingram started to torch the front 7 for big runs. From that point, it was a revolving door at NT (TJE, Dial, Purcell).

Both Dorsey and Williams have done very well indeed.

Defense isn't an issue in SF. The problems are on the offense side of the ball. Mangini can be average and SF will have a top ten defense.

Some posters don't realize our passing is bottom 10in the league though

This is slightly outdated (March 2014), but it lists the average weight (pounds) of all the 3-4 fronts in the league. The orange highlights show that the 49ers averaged the lightest at that position.

edit: can't count. The 49ers are not the lightest at DE.
That's one of the reason our run defense suffered this year

We have never secured a proper NT in the whole time we have run this defense. Cowboy and Ray Mac helped hide this fact and elite LB play made it virtually not matter....but it was exposed this year with injuries being what they were.

Agreed. Having Justin and RayMac helped the 49ers 'get away' with having an undersized NT. Those two were excellent keeping the LBs clean.

Dug around to see the weights of the NTs in Mangini's defenses. When looking at the HC gigs, I only looked at the second season he was there, assuming that by the second season, he had his 'chosen' NT in place.

'07 NYJ - Dewayne Robertson 6'1" 317 lbs
'08 NYJ - Kris Jenkins 6'4" 335 lbs
'10 CLE - Ahtyba Rubin 6'2" 321 lbs

So it appears as though Mangini will use a more prototypical NT that hovers around 320. In the previous 2 seasons, how much of putting Dorsey and Ian at NT is based on defensive philosophy and how much was it was due to not being able to get the right player? I'd rather have Dorsey/Ian playing effectively than having a prototypical NT just for the sake of having a prototypical NT. But back to your point, how much of Dorsey/Ian playing effectively had to do with being flanked by Justin and RayMac? With those two possibly gone, it may be time to spend draft capital on a two gapping NT.

That's the million dollar question. Dorsey did struggle with KC playing NT and was moved to DE. SO for him it could be the talent he is beside orhim just playing better. Can't really tell regarding Williams. Bu I do agree that i don't care about prototypical size just get the job done. Not having Raymac and Cowboy will more than likely make any NT;s play fall off to a certain extent regardless of his skill set. That super bowl year and teh season before that Raymac and Cowboy just wrecked the NFL. It's why they could get away with only rushing 4.

This and this. As long as the job is done, nobody cares about the prototypical size. And yes, there is almost always a dropoff, if the quality of your team becomes worse, save for some HOF-guys.
the fact that Mangini runs a 3-4 D should make alot of people happy around here.
We had lots of new talent at LB start this yr due to two HOFers out injured. We should be great there, and maybe get all those guys on the field at the same time,
using one or two at CB at times. Whatever, wealth at LB is a good problem . Altho I am not a mangini fan, he has lots of talent to make up for poor decisions on his part, or in other words, let's just hope he doesn't get in the way of the terrific D we have. As noted above, how the NT issue works will be interesting. Point is mangini has lots of great talent to work with, and we will see if he can bring along both the DL and the back end, which altho injured, sure had their problems last yr.

Also I sure hope someone is seeing to it we get a real QB whisperer/QB coach, preferably someone like Alex , who was great at making D reads, which is what helped kap a lot while alex was here. Kap said exactly that.
what NT issue? If healthy, Dorsey and Williams do their job.

If is the key word there.

Yeah, Williams seems to be injury-prone given that he went down for injury in every of the last two seaons. Not a good sign because he is young.
But Dorsey was healthy during his NFL career overall, save for this season.
Furthermore we got Dial, as a post before this already mentioned, and TJE and Purcell.
We cannot load up our roster with early-round NTs unless we release Dorsey and/or Williams because we have to comply the 53-man-limit.

Get use to him. He is our next head coach!
If Justin retires, I think it's time for us to move Dorsey to his most beloved position ... DT, and let him be the player he was projected to be (Warren Sapp)...

.. while we can also draft the kid from Kentucky... Melvin Lewis... I saw 4 games of Kentucky and I thought he was the GLUE of their from 7...

We all know Fangio was pretty much garbage until he got his hands on this all-pro laden defense. Fangio wasn't anything special in my eyes, with how he always had our DBs playing soft coverage, in sort yardage situations, allowing the opposing QBs to complete easy passes to pick up first downs. I know damn near half of our defense was banged up, but that Oakland game did it for me. You let A rookie QB look better than A.Rod every time we've played him with Kaepernick as our starting QB. I mean did he even call a blitz that game......?

The only thing that worries me about Eric is his people skills. I don't players not wanting to Re-sign namely Aldon if acts like an uber a*****e. Plus who in the f**k is going to want sign with us if they know our players are getting treated like s**t, players talk. With who we have stacked on the defense, buzZb could coach them to be ranked in the top 10, so Erics coaching isnt my concern. I just don't want a mini Hitler running the defense, making life miserable for our players.

Edit: I don't know why my phone posts some of my old posts. I wantes to post.

If Cowboy retires we could maybe move Ian and Dorsey to DE and draft a monster to play NT, someone around the 320-335 range.
