Also thl I read somewhere that Mangini runs a little different 3-4 from Fangio in terms of the NT position, he runs a 2 gap 3-4 which might require us to get a bigger NT to eat up blocks where as Fangio's was a 1 gap. Do you think Williams or Dorsey could be those type of players or are they too small? When you get a chance can you touch on this subject and if this is a big deal in terms of our overall defense or is it something minor. Sorry if it's already been brought up, like i said in a previous post I haven't been able to go through all 25 pages of this thread yet.
On page 21, post #310, we go into that exact subject when pd24 brings it up. Let me know what you think. It think Ian and Dorsey are undersized when looking at the "prototypical" NT. Were they able to succeed because they had beasts in RayMac and Justin flanking them? Size shouldn't matter as long as they are effective but how much of a role did RayMac and Justin play?

We are scraping the barrel!

That pats team broke a record for injuries at the time with 46 different starters. They had some big injuries to big time players. (Teddy B, Ty Law, Rodney Harrison).
The Pats had the bye in week 7 of 2005. During the first 6 weeks leading up to the bye, they averaged around 350 yards and 27 points allowed per game. The Patriots defense averaged around 310 yards and 16 points allowed per game following their bye in week 7 in 2005. That is a huge difference in points allowed, and shows that it took some time for the D to come together, but once it did it returned to pre-Mangini form despite having a lot of inexperienced players in the line-up.
The pats started the year 4-4 but then finished with a 10-6 record. I think Mangini will be just fine as a D coordinator. He already knows our players and our division opponents.
Yeah but they still played in a very weak division. That's 6 gimme games. If he had done it here against Seattle, Arizona, St Louis (who have played the 9ers extremely tough since Fisher, Quinn, Long got there) then that would be an accomplishment.

disagree. if we get perry we're stacked on the defensive side of the ball and it would actually bring credibility to what baalke said about the coaching staff going forward.

Yup. And if we somehow end up with Chud -- that would be five (I think) coaches on our staff who have been a head coach in the NFL. Tomsula, Mangini, Fewell, Chud, Sparano.

Happened to Fangio and Donatell a few times as well, plus Fewell is not going to be calling the plays, just coaching up the DB's, something he did a tremendous job of when he was secondary coach with the Jaguars.
Fewell was the defensive coordinator when the Giants won the super bowl. Without looking it up, can you name one DB on that super bowl team? That was the team decimated by injuries at corner. They drafted Amukamara and he was hurt all season. I would say that he did a pretty good job maximizing his DBs. That was also the year the giants went on the road and stopped Rodgers at Green Bay when he was the MVP of the league, beat us the in Kyle Williams game, and then beat the Patriots. If you are gonna complain about him as our DB coach then, you would have found something to complain about anyone they would have hired.
Terrel Thomas, Corey Webster, Prince, Jayron Housley,
1st of all, google didn't tell you which of those guys were hurt that year. I don't know what you hoped to gain or what you were trying to prove by making like you knew who their corners were.
2nd of all, who?
3rd, winning a Super Bowl with those guys as your secondary and shutting down Brady an Rodgers with them, is pretty impressive. Some could even argue that it is more impressive then going 8-8 with our backups last year.

fewell has been a head coach? And I wouldn't include Tomsula on the list even though he had one interim game as a head coach.

I find this thread amusing. Just because Mangini is the new DC does not mean that, all of a sudden, Willis, Bowman, The Smith Bros (hopefully), Reid, and Bethea are all going to suck.
This defense is still loaded, and with Mangini's knowledge, and aggressive style, they may actually be better for it. How many times were we burned because of lack of pass rush, or the corners lining up ten yards off the ball on 3rd and 8?

That's a good point, but I could also see them preferring to stick with these players over a coach.

I dare people to go back and watch the Raiders and Chargers games, see both QB's sitting back in the pockets, eating a churro, drinking a Mountain Dew, waiting for someone to get open and then complain about how bad Mangini will be.
The 49ers might get burnt more, they might even give up some more yards but I do expect them to be a lot more aggressive and force the issue more often rather than hoping that sheer talent alone wins the day.
