That doesn't sound bad at all TBH. This defense already does all that minus the plugger NT closing down both A-gaps.

Thanks for the research thl.

Scouting Report

Ian Williams 6-1 319 Notre Dame

Two-gap nose tackle has the anchor and lower-body strength to hold up against double-team. Powerful upper body. Can disengage from linemen with strong hands.

His strength and large lower-body build makes him the prototypical nose tackle prospect, even though he's not the 350-pound behemoth that has succeeded at the position.

He played at 305 the last two seasons.

Ability wise I think Ian Williams can hold his own, but hasn't completed a full season. I forgot how he got injured last season. In 2013, he was taken out with a Sweezy cheapshot so I can't look at that 2013 injury and classify it as being 'injury prone'. He was playing very well last season and as soon as he went down, Mark Ingram started busting some chunk runs in the 2nd half of that game (@NO).

^^^ Thanks DeUh. I like Williams a lot too but I'm not sure he or Dorsey are true 2-gap NT's. Williams, in particular seems more like a slasher to me. And he can be very effective. I bring this up as I wonder if Mangini will be looking for a beefier, Wilfork-body type going forward for his schemes...curious about the DE's too.

Didn't Ian break his leg? Smaller bone below the calf?

I believe he (Sweezy) broke his fibula on the distal end and it was a complete break. I'm not positive but the second injury was born from the prior. Maybe the same break. As odd as this sounds, often times, you're better off breaking the weight baring bone (tibia). That bone heals fast and strong. The fibula is a little b***h and once you screw it up, it tends to be a pain.

I'm seeing a trend there! Big, wide-bodied fatty NT's and perhaps, slightly lighter/quicker slashing NT's like Ian Williams/Glenn Dorsey behind them for 3rd downs and depth? Big boys at DE too. That said, Dial and Carradine fit perfectly. We just need that wide-bodied plugger at NT now.

after seeing that I'm thinking Dorsey slides over to LE and replaces RayMac
Great insight into Mangini as our new DC...really good interview here (recent):

If Jim T is the guy everybody wants to play for it only makes sense to bring in a guy that everybody will hate. Eric M is the yang to Jim T's ying. The dark and the light, the good and the bad, the slightly successful position coach and the utterly failure of a DC now exists in SF.

"How to make a defense underachieve in NE" by Eric M is now available by searching 2005 NE Patriots.

You have to wonder if Mangini will press Baalke hard to go for a wide-body NT in the draft. Danny Shelton probably won't be there but there are a couple others who might be there in the first two rounds.

Would be delighted to see the 49ers add Danny Shelton in the draft. Having a monster in the middle to draw double teams could be one way the team gets by after losing a top talent like Justin Smith.

How exactly did they underachieve? That defense set the NFL record for most different starters during the course of a season. To say that they were injury plagued is an understatement. Having 23 different starters on defense and 45 total for the whole team over a single season is not a recipe for success.

I almost think this kind of NT could be just as crucial, if not more than another OLB for when Aldon re-ups next year and Brooks is gone. With both Carradine and Dockett on the ends and a monster inside, it just opens everything up outside (both the DE's and OLB's) while also pushing the pocket (i.e. stuffing the run and collapsing the step-up lane for QB's with the heavy outside rush).
Eric Mangini spent 1992 in Melbourne, Australia (my home town) coaching the Kew Colts to the Victorian Gridiron Football League championship.
