Eric Mangini Thread

If there is one thing we can count on it is that Mangini and Tomsula are probably salivating with their dline philosophy. I bet a high pick goes towards it. If bowman is back healthy he is the best player on the field. Give him that monster NT so he can do his thing.
Im hoping they pick up Raji as a run support NT and draft best player as posible in the draft

Good idea. Mangini loves those wide-bodied 2-gap guys who plug up the middle and let the DE's and LB's go wild. It might depend on whether or not they think Shelton or Goldman is going to be available when they pick.
A couple years back I read an interview of Jimmy Tomsula and I remember him saying that he doesn't believe in "The Big Bodied" nose tackle.
After JT was hired to be the HC he was being questioned about his qualifications and he pointed out I Williams and G Dorsey's play at Nose and said he thought they were the best in the game. Sorry I don't have time to pull up links but I feel that we will continue with a 1-gap 3-4 defense.

I'm seeing a trend there! Big, wide-bodied fatty NT's and perhaps, slightly lighter/quicker slashing NT's like Ian Williams/Glenn Dorsey behind them for 3rd downs and depth? Big boys at DE too. That said, Dial and Carradine fit perfectly. We just need that wide-bodied plugger at NT now.

Would be delighted to see the 49ers add Danny Shelton in the draft. Having a monster in the middle to draw double teams could be one way the team gets by after losing a top talent like Justin Smith.

I almost think this kind of NT could be just as crucial, if not more than another OLB for when Aldon re-ups next year and Brooks is gone. With both Carradine and Dockett on the ends and a monster inside, it just opens everything up outside (both the DE's and OLB's) while also pushing the pocket (i.e. stuffing the run and collapsing the step-up lane for QB's with the heavy outside rush).

Would love Shelton!

This draft will be suspenseful to say the least.

I also really like Eddie Goldman.
I hope you guys realize that our ability to play the nickle and stop the run was a priveldge unique to personell. One of the things that made the Niners D so good, is that we didn't have to play exotic schemes to create a pass rush or put 8 in the box to stop the run. We could basically run any coverage and stop any run play with our front 7 (J.Smith,Aldon, RayMac, Dorsey,Brooks, Patrick, Bowman). Unfortnatley, half of that squad is gone, retiring or coming back from injury.

I think things are going to change this season. The Nose Tackle position is going to be more important by neccesity. If we dont have Willis and Justin, we are going to need a clogger. Who knows, we might even run a lot of 4-3?

I know you and I are big NT-guys in this 3-4. I would love an active monster inside and just allow Tank, Dockett and Aldon/Brooks/Lynch to pin their ears back more and allow Bowman and Wilhoite to get back in sync again/flow. We'll certainly lose to "stoutness" if Justin goes but we'll add more pass rush with Tank and Dockett. McDonald is 30 years old and has slowed down a bit taking on all those double teams over the years (plus his head) and I actually think, Dial is going to go off there, back to his natural position. Dorsey is a better run clogger than Williams (better slasher NT) but having both will be wonderful. I "hope" we focus just as much on run defense this year as in the past with just more tools and scheme for pass rushing. Unfortunately, we lost 3 older players in McDonald (last year), maybe Justin (60% of the snaps) and Willis (30)...so, Bowman is now the "leader." It's going to be interesting to watch this transition and see what young guns step up now that they have all had time to learn from the best!

After four years of success under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the 49ers players are learning a new system under Eric Mangini. Smith said some concepts are the same -- the 49ers will use a base 3-4 defense, for instance -- but that it's an entirely new vocabulary.

"So far it's going good," Smith said. "It puts everyone in position to make plays. We have some different things that we're working on and doing."

C'mon Mangini..keep the Defense going
Aldon's quote suggests that the DL will still be 1-gapping, unless he means "everyone but the DL."

Things that make you go, "Hmmmm!?"

You beat me to it. There was also this snippet from the Bowman Interview:

"Yeah, a little weird, but we're introducing a new scheme, new coaches, and everything," Bowman said. "Everything is new. I think that's the great thing about it. It's all of us in the one box, and it's all of our jobs to get it the way we want to get it and be able to perform when the season starts."

I'm not sure I like the tinkering when you consider how well our D played. I'm also not excited to change the vocab, which means the players might be thinking more than reacting. Not to mention Mangini likely sees this position as a stepping stone.

Sorry for the negativity, but I'll need proof before I begin to feel positive about the direction of this team.

You can only bludgeon one gap at a time.

I recognize that Fangio did a great job. Though, is it possible that his vocabulary or another nuance was a reason why newer players had trouble learning and cracking the rotation early?

Also, since this is an early minicamp, could it be that they are slowly installing the concepts? For example, focus solely on one-gap now, then slowly progress to two-gap and hybrid schemes.

This is my glass-half-full observation. I do share the other concerns mentioned. It's early though and there's a draft tomorrow!
