After four years of success under defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the 49ers players are learning a new system under Eric Mangini. Smith said some concepts are the same -- the 49ers will use a base 3-4 defense, for instance -- but that it's an entirely new vocabulary.
"So far it's going good," Smith said. "It puts everyone in position to make plays. We have some different things that we're working on and doing."

You beat me to it. There was also this snippet from the Bowman Interview:
"Yeah, a little weird, but we're introducing a new scheme, new coaches, and everything," Bowman said. "Everything is new. I think that's the great thing about it. It's all of us in the one box, and it's all of our jobs to get it the way we want to get it and be able to perform when the season starts."

I'm not sure I like the tinkering when you consider how well our D played. I'm also not excited to change the vocab, which means the players might be thinking more than reacting. Not to mention Mangini likely sees this position as a stepping stone.
Sorry for the negativity, but I'll need proof before I begin to feel positive about the direction of this team.
You missed this crucial part:
"Yeah, a little weird, but we're introducing a new scheme, new coaches, and everything," Bowman said. "Everything is new. I think that's the great thing about it. It's all of us in the one box, and it's all of our jobs to get it the way we want to get it and be able to perform when the season starts."
This is a theme I've been seeing for a while...sounds like players are contributing to scheme WITH the coaches and the scheme is being tailored to the strengths of said players. That sounds refreshing!
Changes are always "a little weird." But if Bowman is happy, shouldn't you be too?
