We are using the same scheme but different terminology. Makes sense so the coaches we let go don't own us like Heiden did to the raiders. Can keep your house but gotta change the locks after losing a key.

I'm hoping we have an all out attacking D.
I'd like us to strike some fear into OC's on other teams.

How many times did Mangini masturbate during this draft? Over/under?

Good stuff to read. Very excited to see what this defense can do this season!

To be fair I think it was also the year they had Moss and the high powered offense, their Def was always on the filed and injured.

The 49ers may not have done it this year, but I wonder if next year the team will draft a NT in the mold of Vince Wilfork. It's unrealistic to expect every draft pick to work out, but if our players from the 2013-2015 drafts, can shown us something in varying degrees based upon experience, that will give us more flexibility in the 2016 draft in terms of moving up or down to acquire more picks or move up for one impact player. I thought we were going in that direction in this draft, but things didn't work out that way. No disrespect to Ian Williams or Glen Dorsey who have played well, but I'd like to have an All-Pro caliber NT to man the middle. It's something we have never had since we switched to the 3-4.

No, it was a few years before Moss. The year Mangini was DC was the year the Patriots set an NFL record for most different starters on defense. It was very much a snakebit year for them.

Ian Williams was rated #1 both years before getting hurt and Dorsey played his ass off in 2013. They aren't seen as the 350+ double gappers but I'll bet there just as strong.Originally posted by LifelongNiner:The 49ers may not have done it this year, but I wonder if next year the team will draft a NT in the mold of Vince Wilfork. All D-coordinators have their style," 49ers safety Antoine Bethea said. "Coach Mangini, his thing is we're going to cause confusion. The opposing offense isn't going to know what we're going to be able to do each down. It could be bringing the pressure. It could be dropping eight into coverage. But it's just keeping the offense on their heels. However, you want to look at it, I think it's going to be a good deal for our defense.

And this is exactly what we anticipated! We will dictate now...not just react in off coverage 95% of the time. And it's not just in bringing more blitzes or more exotic blitzes but additional confusion in coverage schemes (i.e. off coverage schemes, jam-press at the LOS, press, mix of both on the two halfs of the field, blitzing the S, using Tartt as the robber, etc.)

My fear is in making things complicated we may be outsmarting ourselves. This philosophy leaves a lot of room for player error.

disagree. it will be easier because most of the variables will be taken away. on a play they know their responsibilities and it will be...blitz...cover...press..cushion etc it won't be any more difficult than pattern matching was imo.. and they mastered that.

The only thing I missed about Greg Manuskys defensive scheme was his "amoeba defense" that had all defenders hovering near the line showing blitz without revealing there assignment till the ball was snapped.
