Let me get this straight, former DC got the DC job--how is he not coaching TE?

I like what Mangini said about being in the offensive game plan he has learned a lot how offensive minds think and that will carry over to him going back to the defensive side.

Also having 2 guys below him who have DC experience in Tarver and Pendergast is big. Tim Lewis at DB coach has immense experience as well. Excited for the defensive coaching which I didn't think I would say after losing Fangio.

Same here...fan of the entire defensive staff but Mangini and staff, like Geep/Logan/Tomsula, all seem to be looking to maintain our foundation but attack the issues we did have on offense and defense. If nothing else, it's encouraging.

I always thought that Fangio was overrated. The lack of calling blitzes, and having our DB`s give the WR`s huge cushions on 3rd and short situations drove me crazy!

Zero jam press and some personnel matchups questions as well. But overall I can't express too many concerns. He and the whole defensive staff was top notch with the talent we had here.
Please just teach the young secondary to turn and challenge all thrown balls instead of trying to stop the pass catchers from catching them by swats!!

Agree.

However, he wasn't bad or even mediocre.

He is/was a very good D-Coach who came to an uber-talented team and his major shortcoming, IMO, he really didn't attack. We didn't attack the Seahawks and as a result they dictated to us.

IMO, as a head coach his offense wouldn't be attacking either. That spells disaster.

Glad he's in the wind and we're starting w/a clean slate.

In fairness--Fangio was shocked that our LBs weren't better at blitzing when he arrived. He thought it was coaching but perhaps it was just not their strength. He mentioned Willis specifically so it wasn't a small problem from his point of view. But much of blitzing is creating opportunities by moving people around, which Fangio did not want to do. Mangini will likely be more creative. I like both schemes but will be excited to see a more aggressive D this year. The great depth will certainly be useful!

Tim Lewis??

Aint he the CB from Green Bay back in the 80s who returned a 100 yard INT for a TD?

I think I still have his rookie card from Pitt, if that's him..

actually i think it may have more to do with, hmmmmmm a coach who puts people in places where they have shown the ability to succeed in the past as compared to trying to put them into an area like tight ends coach where it was not a good fit. but of course that would ruin the narrative that JT is a meat head so i guess we can discount that theory

wow, just wow. fangio was brilliant...his only mistake in my book was not blitzing joe flacco in the superbowl cuz the boook on flacco was always u gotta blitz him

As I've said in other threads - you can't praise previous defenses without praising Tomsula. Thus, any credit given to how those defenses played gives Jim T credibility in my book and if he thinks Mangini is good enough to coach defense, his previous success definitely earns him at least the benefit of doubt into this year.

It's a good way of looking at it...and that very experienced coaches he DID hire clearly, had respect for him and took the jobs to work under him. So his reputation is stellar among, at least, the defensive community which is standard among head coaching hires...they typically have expertise on one side of the ball plus are highly respected within the coaching circles on at least that side of the ball; this is critical b/c a FO needs a HC who can bring in an entire staff (it's more than just one hire).

Offensively, fortunately, he and Geep saw eye-to-eye and he already had a tremendous working relationship and success with Steve Logan as well. He also already had the best RB coach in the game in Rathman, and brought in a very successful Chris Foerster & Eric Wolford (zone blocking scheme) along with a proven TE coach in Tony Sparano and especially a proven WR coach in Adam Henry with Ronald Curry already on staff to catch him up quickly with our personnel.

In fact, doing a side-by-side comparison, this may be the best coaching staff we've had here in a very long time...compare them now to the rest of the NFL and you can see why Cossell called this a very underrated coaching staff.

At the end of the day, JT will still need to drive it all in one direction and Geep and Mangini will have to prove themselves on game days. The good news is that all three have some experience in these roles and seem to have been preparing for this day for a long time. So we'll see.
