When the NFL became a passing league it negative the big strength of the 46.

Yup, pass happy game now and years later it will be a running game bc coaches will build a heavy offence to out power the light fast defence

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense to me looking back because I think the only team to beat that defense when it was going full bore was Dan Marino's Dolphins, but I may be wrong about that.

If Miami doesn't get upset in the AFC title game, we might of had a much more competitive Superbowl that year.

You see, Jcool understood what my point was...

Crake here was talking about "gimmick defense", then when I try to make a point that the Bears 46D was not One and Done, he tries to make it into a Super Bowl conversation..

Of course, his followers all jumped in w/o even trying to understand the topic..
46D in no way being implemented ..not sure why this is even being discussed

Well aspects of it are still implementing especially the blitzing but you cant keep 8-9 people committed to the run all day in the nfl. Look at the one game they lost in 85, to dan marino and the dolphins because they could throw the ball.

I would say its the equivalent of the run & gun offense due to the fact that concepts may be used from time to time but not consistently and not as the main "bread and butter" the system is built around.

I agree. The Bear front is still being used today, but it's a a sub-package. Could be used against teams that like to run inside and can't threaten the edges. Hey, we all know a team like that.

What makes it s Bear front is that the Center and both Guards all have a DL over them, and the SS is walked down to the LoS.
.. and don't forget the "twin" LBs would stand side to side opposite the offense's strong side while the DE (Richard Dent) would be lined up wide on the weak side..

Nah. There are only 8 in the box. Add 2 more and then we're talking!
Well when your a first run team and can predictable filling the box is easy and with VD and Bolden covered makes it hard. Now that we have multi deep theats are sure hand Bolden all the preasure is ok CK
Wanna post this here as well...great stuff in here:

This and I'd HIGHLY recommend listening to this podcast on scheme of our hybrid players/packages that Mangini is expected to employ:

Thanks NC!

Frustrating waiting for them to get to the meat of the discussion but once there...I enjoyed it a great deal. Sort of confirms my perception of Mangini and gives me more hope for the D maintaining it's high level.

You bet!

4 safeties baby. Crazy how offensive coaches consider Mathieu as a SAM LB. Now that's a hybrid!
