This is correct. Tampa2 is similar to Cover2 zone. There is the 'honey hole' behind the Flat CB and in front of the safety. It's true that the safety could come over and intercept it (can't tell where Dahl was on that play), but there is a window of opportunity on the Fade route.
Here is QP (red box) exploiting the honey hole in cover 2 zone. As soon as he gets past the CB, he slows down his route so that he doesn't get too close to the safety.

In all the clips I've seen of Fangio's defense, I never saw him call Tampa2. If it happened, it must have been once and I missed it.

Base 3-4 personnel
One deep safety. There is a safety in the box. CBs up in press. There are only 3 DL at the line of scrimmage with both OLBs in the slot. Is there a 4th rusher?
A QB sees this presnap alignment and may think cover1 or cover3. To his right, there is a Fade/Out combination. Against either of these coverages (cover1/cover3), the Out route will work to attack the flat.

Ball is snapped and one of the ILBs is the 4th rusher. The box safety quickly gains depth to his deep 1/2 (blue arrow). The deep safety (#43) runs to his deep 1/2 (blue box). The other ILB gains depth (#54 Moody).

The QB targets the quick out to the slot WR. Acker (CB at top of screen), is not playing man coverage as if cover1, so he's not going to turn his back and follow the Go route. Acker is not bailing like a cover3 1/3 defender. He's actually a flat zone defender and sees this the whole way.

It's actually Tampa2. The coverage disguise gives the QB a false read and baits the offense to attack a strong area of the defense. The flats of tampa2 is a strong area. Acker comes up and makes the easy tackle for +1 yard gain.

Great breakdown.....I like the disquise and a very nice tackle by Acker.

Just as an aside, when's the last time you seen a team go 4 wide under center like that. I'll be honest it's been a while since I've seen it without a shotgun or pistol set.

Also given that set, if we wouldn't have disguised it that could have been a real easy audible to a smash on either side and eat up that Tampa 2 or cover 2.

I don't think we will see it very often. It is a give-away quick pass because if I were a defense vs that set, I would blitz up the middle. With the lack of protection, QB will be sacked on his drop. Which is why that formation is a dead giveaway to a quick pass.

Makes me think Houston may have a draw or something out of that look. Given the nature of the game now, I would just put the QB in a pistol out of that form. You get a little more time for the QB and still have the benefit of the back behind you for some downhill running.
"Both (run) 3-4 defenses, but Coach Mangini does things differently," Skov said. "Obviously they're both great coordinators, but we're excited to use the tools he's given us this year."

Skov and Nick Moody both blitzed in Saturday's exhibition-opening loss at Houston, as did some defensive backs.

"As a linebacker you want to be active, whether it's in coverage or blitzing," Skov said. "Obviously we want an aggressive mentality, so being able to be on the attacking end from the get-go with blitzes is fun."

"He ran the defense really well. He's a very, very smart guy," Mangini said. "Does a great job with adjustments. Very rarely do you have to coach Shane twice on the same mistake. He sees it, understands the coaching point on it and typically it doesn't happen again."

Added Mangini: "He's getting a lot of playing time, and that's great for him, and that's great for us to see where he's going. I was happy with what he did."

"I wasn't drafted. I'll be battling 'till the day my career is over," Skov said. "You have to have that mentality, whether you're drafted or not, actually, to stick around in this league. Every year is a new challenge and they're always looking for your replacement. I'm fighting, scratching and clawing, and so is every other guy in that room. There's 90 of us, and there'll be 53, soon enough."

Dang, this sounds like HaRoman's offense the past 4 years.

Eric Mangini describes how 49ers defensive staff communicates on game days
Posted on August 18, 2015 by Cam Inman

We've all heard how the 49ers' new chain of communication works offensively: from coordinator Geep Chryst in the upstairs booth, to quarterbacks coach Steve Logan on the field and then into Colin Kaepernick's radio earpiece inside his helmet.

So how does the 49ers defense play telephone?

Allow defensive coordinator Eric Mangini to explain:

"I'll get the personnel from, Mick Lombardi (defensive assistant) did it this weekend with Jason Tarver (senior defensive assistant/linebacker) in the booth and E.J. (Ejiro Evero, defensive assistant) as well. Mick is giving me the personnel, Jason will confirm that and also talk about down and distance. They'll both be looking at substitutions.

"That comes down to me. I'll make the call into the players. Clancy (Pendergast, linebackers coach) and Tim (Lewis, secondary coach) both work on personnel, getting the right guys in and out.

"After the play, everybody is tied into a different personnel. Jason works the front seven. I can work with the front seven or back end. Up in the booth, Mick's been working with the secondary, E.J.'s been working with the linebackers. Each position is covered up top, and below.

"It's a little bit like air traffic control."

This is a nice article about how Eric Mangini and his defensive assistants operate during a game. Very interesting read.

On defense I don't think it will have the negative impact we saw on offense, from the sound of it it's only Mangini deciding the call and the rest are basically ensuring we have the right personnel on the field for that call?

Have a huge concern about the way Mangini does things all around. I am very skeptical about our defensive plan. Have a feeling we will be the opposite of the Jim era: offense but inconsistent defense that's full of talent.

Anyone care to shoot a HaRoman nickname at Mangini? I go for Mangardi, Manbardi?
