Eric Mangini describes how 49ers defensive staff communicates on game days
Posted on August 18, 2015 by Cam Inman

We've all heard how the 49ers' new chain of communication works offensively: from coordinator Geep Chryst in the upstairs booth, to quarterbacks coach Steve Logan on the field and then into Colin Kaepernick's radio earpiece inside his helmet.

So how does the 49ers defense play telephone?

Allow defensive coordinator Eric Mangini to explain:

"I'll get the personnel from, Mick Lombardi (defensive assistant) did it this weekend with Jason Tarver (senior defensive assistant/linebacker) in the booth and E.J. (Ejiro Evero, defensive assistant) as well. Mick is giving me the personnel, Jason will confirm that and also talk about down and distance. They'll both be looking at substitutions.

"That comes down to me. I'll make the call into the players. Clancy (Pendergast, linebackers coach) and Tim (Lewis, secondary coach) both work on personnel, getting the right guys in and out.

"After the play, everybody is tied into a different personnel. Jason works the front seven. I can work with the front seven or back end. Up in the booth, Mick's been working with the secondary, E.J.'s been working with the linebackers. Each position is covered up top, and below.

"It's a little bit like air traffic control."

Have a huge concern about the way Mangini does things all around. I am very skeptical about our defensive plan. Have a feeling we will be the opposite of the Jim era: offense but inconsistent defense that's full of talent.

Anyone care to shoot a HaRoman nickname at Mangini? I go for Mangardi, Manbardi?

Well I hope you're half wrong (naturally). Hmmm, I nailed the HaRoman one. I have to wait to see if this system is counter-effective and easily defeated first. If so, I'll have all sorts of names!

I don't mind that he will provide an aggressive defense as it is more entertaining to watch. I just hope Tomsula keeps a high-level view of it and controls Mangini if and/or when that control is needed. At the end of the day, it's all on Tomsula. Doesn't make sense that he wants to makes sense on offense but appears to be doing the opposite on defense. This one is on Tomsula if we are blowing too many coverages or calling timeouts while on defense.

Hahaha...teamwork man, teamwork!
Mangini and the 49ers seemed to do a little of both -- reveal and conceal -- in Saturday's preseason opener. According to the scouting service Pro Football Focus, the 49ers blitzed on nine of 34 Texans drop backs. That's a rate of 26.5 percent, not much more than the ho-hum 20 percent rate with which they blitzed in previous seasons.

Still, they sent six pass rushers on three plays, seven rushers once and eight -- a jail-break blitz -- on one play. The 49ers never sent eight players at one time at any point in the last four seasons when Vic Fangio ran the defense, Pro Football Focus noted.

Still, Mangini hinted that there was more to come. He referred to Saturday's game plan as "a small package of pressures." He said he chatted with his Texans counterpart Romeo Crennel, who was on the same staff in New England, and they had a similar approach to the contest.

"We both had the same philosophy," Mangini said. "We had two or three things, a drive gets going or you want to change the tempo, you could throw in, but it wasn't like a typical package."

They blitzed a lot more than I thought they did on Saturday. That's a good sign. You can't always sit back and play coverage. That type of vanilla scheme always seemed to kill Fangio's defense when up against a young pocket QB.

Can't wait to see this defense really come together during the season! If they do get on a roll & begin to create big plays & some turnovers we could be in for a real treat. Hoping it is sooner rather than later though!

Amen to that! Lots of tools to use...many have been sitting in the shed. Now let's hope Mangini know how and when to use them all!

I loved what I saw from our front 4, can't wait to see dockett tough.. I'm anxious to see how Bowman looks before I judge our front 7, but I trust him and whiloute to be fine, aldon is a huge loss, but Lynch Harlod and Brooks are solid. I love our safties, but our corners really worry me. With exception to brock, I like him, very underrated. I wish we drafted Marcus Peters over Armstead. Not that Armstead is bad, but I think we needed a CB more than a DT

Jcool is that you? on a serious note, putting my homer cap aside, I think we have a top 10 D that can be top 5 if a couple young guys ball.

Tank
Reaser
Acker
Lynch
Johnson
Dial
Armstead
Purcell maybe now to.

Ill stop there but there are more. If two of those guys ball at a pro bowl level we can be top five. I didn't include any of the people I feel already will play at a high level like lynch bowman brock williams etc...

Peters was the pick for sure. Both had high upside but cb was a position of need a bit more than DL.

You know, I wonder if b/c we're actually going to USE all of our personnel, if again, we won't have any pro-bowlers or all-pro's but still end up top 5 collectively again b/c the 'team defense' was so good.
Might take awhile for these guys to gel. into the new D. Sounds more complicated.

I suspect some miscommunication early.

Tough call there! Obviously Baalke loved his young CB's and depth there. We lost Culliver/Cox. But Brock wipes out one, Wright, the other...then you have Johnson, Acker, Reaser, etc. On the DL, we lost Smith/McDonald. What is easier for Baalke to find...a 7-tech DE in the 3-4 or a CB? The ILB position was covered with Tartt (hybrid SS/ILB in the 4-safety defense). I think he made the right choice but I think fans need to remember that the DL takes a couple years to develop...now we're seeing that with Dial, Carradine, Okoye, Purcell, etc. Fans get WAY too caught up in 'value draft picks' IMHO.

Very plausable. But the Best players play, and we haven't seen our rotation yet so we don't know that it will be that drastic of a change. And even if they aren't out every snap, doesn't mean they aren't playing at a pro bowl level.
