when you show a 9 man front and then back into a full zone that will do it to you. he didn't know what to do.

magini is like the guy in a movie who is outsmarting the police or fbi. he seems to be 4 steps ahead of them because he knows the protocols and procedures and built his plan around counting on them doing what they've been taught to do.

that's the best way to describe this scheme.

AND it's "Preseason".

Can't wait to see what he unloads in the regular season.

Maan...I can't wait to see the 1st team D with Bow manning the middle. He looked solid in just those 3 snaps. Lets just hope his knee can stay healthy.
With less established quality players, the D is playing inspired football, and they seem to be enjoying it. Fangio had a top 5 rush D with a front 7 that were all ALL PROS. With a huge change over, mangini has these guys playing lights out and we still don't have the DBs fixed yet. This is going to be one fun yr on D.
Four straight 3-and-outs against the Cowboys 1's and 2's - pretty impressive. Now, it's true that the Cowboys probably get a first down on their second possession if that TE catches the ball, but still - that was real good defense all the way around.
What did you see on that very first play?

"I don't know, I just wanted to make a play. We have a triangle that we read and it was one of those things where I felt like it was the right play to just shoot the gap and make a tackle for a loss."

that's what bowman said after the game.
giving a player with some of the best instincts in the game the freedom to make those plays?
wow i am really excited.
You guys threw that third down on that play, that last one before you guys stepped off the field?

"I was just baiting [Cowboys QB] Tony [Romo], making him think I was blitzing the A-gap, thinking he had that running back free out on the edge. It was just kind of like a bait, and I got him to throw the ball to him and make the play."
more bowman
Cowboys were 12-4 last yr, and were a really good team. We handled their O with 3 and outs like it was effortless. This 8-8 team (and we weren't nearly that good), just mowed down dallas, and took no prisoners. True, deMarco Murray has gone, and dallas did not use 3 of their starting OL. (my bro in Ft Worth told me that ). Still, the cowboys looked like they had been hit with a haymaker, and until our first unit left the field, cowboys did zilch. Considering there is still mass movement going on in the DBackfield, this group looks to be playing awesome D once they have all starters out there. And I was worried about mangini being able to fill fangio's shoes? Ha, maginini I like better than fangio and we have only played two PS games.
Keep it up, ManGenius. Keep it up.
Mangenius will make this defense very interesting, so many moving pieces.

We mowed them down last year in Dallas too. Went ultra conservative in the 2nd half but still.

I don't put too much stock into one drive as sometimes it takes 6 or 7 drives or even a half for a team to make necessary adjustments. However, watching our defense fly around for the entire game was great to see. We also didn't give up anything to the 1st (minus Dez) or 2nd string WRs which was great to see. Very aggressive all game instead of playing 10 yards off the WRs all game. Very nice!

Love the theme of turnovers from this D. Also getting non-conventional pressure on the QB. Losing #99 is forcing this D to be more creative in making the necessary plays.

How good is Mangenius? Craig Dahl looks like an All-Pro.

A glimpse at Mangini's defense and some pattern matching.
Can't tell the coverage call, but Reaser and Dahl are playing the 'Cut' technique on the #2 WR.
DAL: trail concept with the red In route clearing the way for the orange In route.
I forgot to number the WRs. But the closest to the sideline is #1, next inwards is #2 (orange), then next in is #3.

Reaser takes outside leverage to defend outside breaking routes. Over the top positioning to defend any vertical route. If #2 goes vertical, Reaser will match him.
Dahl is making a flat foot read of #2, not gaining any depth, he's not playing as a cover2 safety. He's ready to cover #2 if #2 breaks inside towards the middle of the field.
The QB is thinking: With the red route clearing #29 out of the way, the orange route should be open.

The #2 WR breaks inside. Dahl is now responsible for that route as Reaser replaces Dahl's spot on the field. Reaser is seen pointing, passing off coverage of #2. Dahl will cut the route, and is breaking before the QB has even started his motion since Dahl is reacting to #2.

Dahllin'!
